1953 Studebaker Starlight

1953 Studebaker Commander
Starlight Coupe
When the 1953 Studebaker Starlight coupe debuted in late 1952, it stunned the public and the other automakers. It was a complete break in style from every other American auto. The swoopy lines of the coupe model were like nothing else on the road. In 1953, Studebaker was presented with the Fashion Academy Award. Most industrial designers and other automotive experts name the 1953-54 Studebaker coupes as the outstanding American car of the Fifties. In 1953 it wonMotor Trend'saward for "the most aesthetically styled, "? and it was later cited as a milestone by the Museum of Modern Art. it was easy to associate the clean and vaguely futuristic styling of the car with something that might emerge from Europe's great automobile design houses. The tasteful Studebaker coupes inspired other American car companies to get lower and sleeker with their future offerings.
I am the 3rd owner of this Starlight coupe. It has always been a California car and well taken care of. It is completely rust free and there is no repaired rust that I could find.
It has been repainted once in the past. it was done well and still shines nicely.
Most of the chrome was also redone. There is a small dent in the driver side tail light and small crack in the driver side front grill surround. The grill bars were not re done so they have some pits. There is a blemish under the decal on the rear bumper. The front bumper is newly re-plated.
The interior has also been redone sometime in the past. It is a non original fabric, but in keeping with the style of the car. There are no tears or worn spots. The dash chrome is original so there are some minor imperfections. The steering wheel is cracked in several places. I did not want to cover it to hide this flaw, but a standard lace on cover would be a big improvement.
The 232 cubic inch V8 engine was rebuilt in 1984 by Studebakers West in Redwood City, CA at 84,000 miles (the car has 129,000 miles on it now) A NOS short block was installed at that time. The automatic transmission works perfectly.
The car is still 6 volt, and the wiring has all been redone.
The tires match and have plenty of tread but are probably old and should be replaced if the car is to be driven regularly.
Some emblems have been removed, but replacements will be included with the car.
The car can be personally delivered to South Bend, IN, or anywhere along the route from San Francisco to South Bend for a nominal fee.
Rust free, well maintained, 1953 Starlight coupes that are ready to drive and show do not come along very often. This is your chance to own one of the most attractive and iconic cars ever built. My reserve is low considering the exceptional condition of this one.
