This 1983 Volvo 240 DL is a fantastic example of one of the most iconic Volvo models produced and represents an era of engineering that will never be seen again.
Originally sold through the Volvo dealer Frank Demma, in Addison, Illinois, this Volvo has lived of its life in one garage in the western suburbs of Chicago, where it was always kept with several other cars and driven a total of 1,460 miles. It has obviously never seen any type of inclement weather, like rain, snow, or freezing temperatures.
Why was it driven 1,460 miles over the last 40 years? According to the original owner, a long-time friend of the current owner, he saw the Volvo at the dealership in 1983 “just passing by” and decided to take a look, as it was different than any of the American offerings of the time. Up close, not only did it look different, it was built different, and to a standard unlike anything else.
So he bought the car off of the showroom floor, and drove it sparingly for the first few years of his ownership, as he had other cars in his garage to drive. Then, as with other cars of his, he simply preserved it as one the objects in his garage he “just liked to look at” and enjoy.
All of the original documentation is included with the car, including the window sticker, service and warranty book, the maintenance manual and booklet (which documents all of the service through the car’s life), owner’s manual, and other assorted manuals and booklets covering the operation of the 240DL.
This Volvo is a true time capsule. The condition of this car is absolutely original and beautifully preserved. Everything facet of the car is exactly as it came from the factory and nearly untouched. The current owner is technically the second owner from new, and has treated the car in the same manner as the first owner.
As you can see from the ad, the mileage in the photos is 1,460 and the mileage stated is 1,464, the reason for which is the time period between when the photos were taken and the listing of the ad. The car is being driven very sparingly to ensure all mechanical aspects of the car are in working order.
BODY:
This Volvo 240 DL wears its factory correct and original factory Dark Brown (Code 616) paint. As aVolvo enthusiast will note, this color code is not part of the color offerings from Volvo in 1983. Over the course of the current owner’s care, factory correspondence has been obtained that this car was painted Dark Brown as a test color for the 1984 models, and is most likely one of, if not the only, 240 DL or any other Volvo model for that matter, painted this color in 1983. That, coupled with the extraordinarily low mileage, makes this 240 one of the rarest Volvos in the world.
All of the body panels and ripple, dent, and rust free and have never had any sort of body or accident damage. Please take a look at the paint meter photos included in thedescriptionsection of this ad. Ihave taken readings of every single panel and can state beyond a doubt that all of the paint is original.
The glass and seals are in excellent condition and there are no leaks evident. The windshield is original and also in flawless condition.
The body trim, including the stainless steel, chrome, and rubber, is all in virtually as new condition. Everything appears to be original.
INTERIOR:
The Beige Cloth interior (code 352) is virtually as new, with all areas free of defects and no wear evident. The door panels are also in the same condition. The carpet is also original to the car and in perfect overall condition, with no wear or fading evident.
All of the accessories are in perfect working condition. The windows roll up and down and work perfectly.
The trunk is in stunning original and virtually untouchedcondition, with the trunk covering being in original condition with no missing pieces, and the spare tire, jack, and associated tools accounted for and beautiful.
UNDERCARRIAGE:
The underside of the car is exactly what a 1,464 mile car should look like. A very solid and very well-preserved undercarriage shows almost no signs of age, and as you can see from the photos, is very original and corrosion free, with the original undercoating present.
ENGINE and ENGINE COMPARTMENT:
The powerplant in this 240DL is the original 4-Cylinder, 2.3 liter overhead cam engine. It has 1,464 original miles and has been meticulously cared for throughout its life. It is very well sorted with all maintenance being performed recently. All aspects of the motor are in perfect working order, and the compression ratio on all cylinders is exactly where they should be.
The engine bay is in original condition, and as delivered from the factory. All components in the engine compartment are in operational condition. Every detail of the engine compartment is “Volvo” and beautifully presented. It would be difficult to find an engine compartment with a better presentation on an original car.
When the current owner made the decision to re-commission the car after a long period of static display, it was with the upmost care to ensure all of the original components were functional and that parts needing replacement were retained for their historical significance. The hoses and belts were replaced as they were not only petrified, but frozen in place.
TRANSMISSION:
The automatic transmission in this car is in perfect working order and functions as a low mile car should. It is the original transmission to the car.
TIRES, WHEELS, and BRAKES:
The tires on the car are the ORIGINAL Dunlop tires and are obviously nearly new, with no wear, dry rot, cracks, or UV damage evident. The wheels are also in beautiful original condition.
The entire braking system has also been serviced recently. It was flushed and re-filed completely, and filled with new fluid to ensure every aspect of the braking system works as it should.
UNDERCARRIAGE:
The undercarriage is, as seen in the photos, extremely clean, free from any type of rot, and original. The factory undercoat is actually still present. The only part replaced (for ease of operation) was the fuel tank, which is an OEM replacement and exactly like the original tank. The original fuel tank (which will be included in the sale of the Volvo) was removed, cleaned and tested for any leaks, and is ready to be installed back on the car, if the new owner wants every component to be 100% original.
OVERALL DRIVING IMPRESSIONS:
This 240 DL runs and drives as should – It’s barely broken in. It is rock solid and a pleasure to drive. The 4-cylinder powerplant runs and accelerates smoothly and very quickly and the transmission shifts as it should.
The car drives around town and on the open road with no squeaks, creaks, or rattles. It needs absolutely nothing to drive, show, and enjoy. All of the mechanical aspects of the car work as they should.
PLEASE NOTE:
The originality and presentation of the car is what really sets it apart from other 124 models in this period. This Volvo still retains all of its original or N.O.S. components. This means the engine, transmission, rear end, etc. are original or correct to the car. All of the numbers, markings, etc., are correct.THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN MODIFIED IN ANY WAY. I also have a clean CarFax run in the past month that is also present in the documentation.
A sample of all of the fluids that were removed from the 240 when it was recommissioned were saved. And again, the original fuel tank, which was replaced with an exact OEM part, was also saved, cleaned, and made ready for use, and will be included with the sale of the car. It is in the original outer condition, with the original undercoating matching the rest of the car still present and visible.
PLEASE NOTE: I have walk aroundvideos of the Volvo as well as driving videos. Please message me directly and I will be happy to send them to you. I am also always looking for interesting cars and motorcycles to add to my collection. If you have something you would consider selling, oryou have an interesting story to share, please contact me atSIX THREE ZERO, FOUR THREE ZERO, THREE EIGHT FIVE FIVE.
This Volvo is an original and very special car that, as evidenced by the low mileage and condition, has always been driven very sparingly and properly cared for.
