You are looking at our baby, our 1980 Volkswagen Westfalia, proudly named Blue. She is a great condition 1980 Air-cooled Volkswagen Vanagon with the Westfalia full camper conversion, and we are sad to see her go.If you know Westy’s you know the lifestyle, if you don’t, you will immediately fall in love with owning such a fun van. We really do not want to sell, but recently bought a home and have no place to keep it any longer.
We have owned it for about a year and a half, and have done quite a bit to it in within that time, everything listed below has been done within the last year to year and a half.
- New Brake pads, front and rear, new brake drums in the rear.
- New brake Lines front and rear
- New Fuel Lines (a must) throughout engine compartment and the feed side of the fuel tank
- New Bosch Fuel Pump (old one was making noise)
- New Fuel Filter

- New Napa Coach battery that is wired to run rear electronics without draining main battery (also charges while driving)
- New Dual Battery Charger, just plug the van into the wall and it will charge both coach and starting batteries
- New 1000w power inverter, for operating small electronics, wired to one of the rear power outlets
- New DIY paint job, it isn’t perfect, and could use some work, but it kept the rust off the body.
- Bluetooth amp for rear speakers while parked
- New Canvas Top, no tears or rips and should be good for years to come.
- New water lines for sink and water tank
- New Adjustable voltage regulator
- New Battery cut off switch for coach battery with modern fuse panel
The Good ( in addition to the above)
- Previous owner reupholstered the interior, there are some tears behind the driver seat.
- Fresh General All Terrain Tires with lots of tread left (van came with these)
- Clock works
- Fridge works
- Stove works
- Comes with the Big Green Westfalia Bible
-Regularly gets 20mpg on highway
-Passed smog 8 months ago
The Bad.
- Odometer is broken, is stuck at 78,000 miles but I would assume quite a bit more than this.
- Will need a water pump for the sink soon, will lock up if not used for a few weeks.
- Paint was a DIY job
- Some rust around the windows
- Missing door under the rear passenger seat
- A few dents in the sliding door, and in front of the rear wheel on the driver side
- Steering rack has a torn boot (comes with a replacement)
- Small oil leak (believe its from the oil cooler)
- Needs a new windshield washer squirter (pump works fine)
- One heater box cable is frozen, needs replacement, but heater still works fine.
Whew. I am sure there are more things that I have forgotten, but it should be a great van for someone to make their own or to use as is. We just took it on a trip up to big bear and it performed great. Again we are sad to see her go, but are excited to see where she will go next.
