Description:
1974 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic basket weave
I bought this car in Sept 2016, for parts as I was doing a body off restoration of another 1974. Car had been parked for several years because passenger rear shock housing had been cut and welded to lower the car, and the weld had broken leaving no shock, also car would start but immediately but immediately shut off. Curiosity got the better of me, I replaced ignition switch, cranked car, ran good. Did compression test all 4 cylinders good. Looking at the rear shock tower, I made a decision to put the car back together instead of parting it out. I replaced both rear trailing arms, replaced one axle and rear bearings and seals both sides, new hubs, shoes and brake lines, hard and soft through out the car, replaced bearings and hubs on front with new hard and soft brake lines as well. Replaced master cylinder and all wheel cylinders and front brake shoes. All 4 tires are new, new speedometer cable. New front windshield, new seals and wipers in doors, new door handles for lock purposes, new window registers, all new window seals. New door panels, new seat covers, carpet is in decent shape, and head liner is good. New radio, antennae, and new full dash cover glued in place. Replaced struts in front to raise car to original height, all new bushings in control arms.Floor panels are in good shape except for battery box area, which I patched and sealed. Heater channels are okay, however, the car did not have heater boxes, and all of the heat functions have been removed by the prior owner. The fresh air blower which was standard equipment on this year is also missing, as well as the windshield washer fluid container, and no I did not take them for my other super beetle, but the washer bottle is a common item.
The car had been orange from the factory, and had been repainted by previous owner with a base coat and clear coat and the clear coat had mostly flaked off. I thought I could remove clear coat and repaint, not so, sanded to bare metal on exterior, primed with Nason urethane and used a Nason toyota blue ribbon single stage urethane to repaint. Paint is not show car quality, but looks good, plenty of paint on car for further buffing.
After pulling engine to replace engine compartment sound deadening material and to replace rear main seal, I was in the process of adjusting the valves and discovered a weak spring on #3 cylinder, and rather than replace the one spring, I decided to replace both heads with new. While replaceing the rear main seal, I checked the end play and it was within tolerance, so all in all good engine. While out, I replaced the fuel pump and installed electronic ignition.
Car is good enough that it could be totally restored or fun to drive as it is after a lot of blood sweat and tears and money..
