1973 FJ 40 Toyota Landcruiser – Rare Find

Up for sale is a1973 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser (July 73). It was purchased by the current ownerin the spring of 1999, who is believed to be the fourth owner. This vehicle hasonly 251 miles since it was purchased. It has 31,064.2 original miles on the original 2F 2.4L 6-cylinder Toyotaengine. It is a 3-speed manualtransmission with part-time 4-wheel drive transfer case (front locking hubs). It is mechanically sound, works and drives as expected. It is a fun ride, considering the experience and the original design of the vehicle, meaning thisFJ has the capability to go many places but it is geared low and is not meantto be a speed demon.

Over the course of the past 24 years, it has undergone acomprehensive frame off “nut and bolt” restoration which includes more than thefollowing:

The exterior presents itself as a very good restore.Meaning there may be a few flaws if one looks closely but is a solid paintrefinish. There are no dents or damage to the body of this FJ. The frame ofthis vehicle was completely blasted and repainted with a heavy-duty exteriorblack matte paint. This included the axles and underbody suspension. Thebumper, bumperettes, and backstep blasted and repainted. The top has been repainted. In restoring thebody, care was taken to remove rust from this vehicle. New fenders, new tubs, floorboards were replaced with parts from Cool Cruisers of Texas. With theaddition of this new hardware, the old seams at the joints were removed andreplaced with new seam seals. The body was smoothed out, leveled, and repaintedon a rotisserie to ensure coverage. The rubber seals around the doors andwindows were replaced. The glass is free of any chips, cracks, or damage. Theexterior lighting is functional with the blinkers having also been replacedwith new parts. Noted is different glassplaced on the backup light as we did not want to replace this with what is nowthe replacement, we did not like the look. The mirrors are new replacements aswell.

The interior seats were reupholstered in gray vinyl.Noted is that the headrests are not present with this vehicle but the hole forthem remains under the vinyl covering if some are located. The jump seat frames, and the backing ofthe seats were powered coated. The dash remains as it was when the vehicle waspurchased. It is solid but does have a crack located init, the roof lining has been replaced, a few wrinkles but an upgrade from the50-year-old one. Currently, it does have black floor mats and coverings.

The are several additional things that could be mentioned about this FJ and the maintenancesince our family has owned it. For example, the brakes were rebuilt, and thesuspension components were installed during the rebuild, the windshield wiper’smotor switch had come up missing since the start of the rebuild, (these workedwell prior to this missing) the heater has been repaired, gas tank with the accessories are new, and the intake manifold has been replaced. I am sure there is muchmore. All things that go along with owning a 50-year-old vehicle. Included withthis purchase are any spare parts such as a roll bar we did not put on, the skid plate which has been blasted and repainted with the frame, a secondcarburetor, the floor jack which has been blasted and painted for looks etc. Noted also is that this vehicle has beenstored inside and has not seen any rain or harsh weather conditions. In fact, few miles have been put on the FJ since the restoration has been completed sominor adjustments from the overall restoration may be appropriate.

Overall, this is a clean, solid, minimally used FJ40 thathas not been abused. It is a rare find. No disappointments. Pictures includedare not taken by a professional so there is some reflection and glare.
