1986 Pontiac Firebird Convertible Black RWD Automatic TRANS AM
1986 Pontiac Firebird TRANS AM
Vehicle DetailsBefore GM had third-generation F-body convertible conversions performed by ASC Auto Form Corporation was one of several companies that did its own adaptations to create stylish drop-top pony cars. This 1986 Pontiac Trans Am Convertible is an example. It was converted in 1986 and with the top down, it rides and feels like a roadster.
The seller is a retired automotive
technician with 50 years of experience and the previous owner is a professional
autobody specialist with 35 years on the job.
A full body restoration was done in 2021. A few mechanical
upgrades were also performed on this T/A.
POWERTRAIN
Under the hood is a 205-horsepower, 305 cu.in., Tuned-Port-Injected OHV V8.'
"I recently replaced all of the computer-controlled
sensors, as well as all eight fuel injectors."
A high-performance manually adjustable fuel regulator was mounted under the hood with easy access for adjustment.
Cold start up is smooth,
without any exhaust smoke or engine noise. The drivetrain is dry, and it sports a newly rebuilt four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive that operates as designed.
EXTERIOR
As far as I can tell, there haven't been any past rust repairs. The
previous owner replaced the Aero package parts with "OEM components and he
applied a new mirror-like [black and silver] finish. The paintwork is flawless and is radiant."
During the convertible conversion, Auto Form Corporation removed the back seat and added braces, which are covered by a fiberglass insert. The roof is rigid with convertible-top material drawn over it, the assembly retracts manually into the rear storage area of the
vehicle. Both the top and the padded headliner are
"wear-and-tear free, but
there is no back window in this car (see photo)." All the glass is
"in great shape, and
the seals and gaskets are in very good condition with no leaks." The lights work, and even the retractable headlight doors
open and close with "no issues".
INTERIOR
The gray interior, including door panels, cloth seats, and console are in very good condition, the rug is "excellent," and the
trim is complete. All the instruments operate properly, as do the A/C, heat, and
power windows and door locks, but the stock stereo does not.
CHASSIS
The undercarriage is clean and the wheelwells are solid and rust free. An undercarriage
reinforcement was added by Auto Form Corporation as part of the convertible conversion in 1986. New high-performance front struts and rear shocks are installed. Upgrades were made throughout the braking
system, including the flex hoses, calipers, pads, and drilled-and-slotted rotors.
DOCUMENTATION
This vehicle will be sold on a clean Pennsylvania title in his
name. I have a history of the company that did the conversion." This 1986 Pontiac Trans Am Convertible offers a look back
into a time when the automotive
aftermarket stepped up to create unique wind-in-your-hair variations of third-
generation F-bodies, like this two-seater.
