V Fine Motorcars is proud to offer this beautiful one owner 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT-500 Fastback that has never been offered for sale until now. This Shelby GT-500 was purchased new for $5,212.28 in 1968 from Fuller Ford in Cincinnati, Ohio and the car has had the same owner ever since.
This Shelby Mustang was highly optioned and painted Highland Green exterior along with the Deluxe Saddle Tan leather interior. The interior features factory AC, tilt steering, bucket leather seats, a center console with a Cobra-embossed armrest and woodgrain trim on the steering wheel, doors and across dash. It also features a roll bar and a fold down sport deck rear seat. All Shelbys feature a 140 mph speedometer and an 8,000 rpm tachometer. The originality of this Shelby is preserved, and it has not undergone any restoration, maintaining its authenticity. The car was repainted back to the factory Highland Green color in the early 2000s.
Under the hood lies the goods-a 428 cu in Police-Interceptor V8 topped with an aluminum mid-rise intake along with a Holley carburetor with a Ram air system making the lightweight Shelby GT-500 one of the quickest Fords of the era. This GT-500 also came equipped with a C6 3-speed automatic transmission, upgraded front springs, power steering, and power brakes with larger drum brakes in the rear, and disc brakes up front. Additionally, fiberglass components were added to various parts of the car, such as the front-end nose, hood, rear taillight panel, the deck lid, quarter panel extensions, and side scoops. Shelby also added the white GT-500 badge striping above the rocker panels.
While the Shelby GT-500 was originally rated at 335 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque, it's known that the actual output is closer to an impressive 400 horsepower. It was not uncommon to see these cars at the local drag strips running sub 15 second quarter-mile times at 100 MPH showcasing its agility and power.
What makes this particular Shelby even more special is its rarity. Of the 1,140 fastbacks produced in 1968, this car stands out as one of only 38 produced with the Highland Green exterior, Saddle Tan interior, and an automatic transmission. Moreover, it's one of just 8 Shelby's equipped with the Highland Green exterior, Saddle Tan interior, an automatic transmission with factory air conditioning. This car has the correct Ford and Shelby VIN plates in all the right places. These plates can be seen in the photo gallery.
This 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT-500 offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of automotive history. With its originality, detailed history, and limited production numbers, it is sure to be a conversation starter wherever it goes.
