Rarest Porsche Targa in the World
1978 Porsche 911
Serious Porsche Collectors Dream come true! Unicorn found. Own a historically significant Porsche 930 that nobody else in the world can ever have because this is the first and only in existence. This is a documented, by Porsche, one of one 1978 Porsche 930 Targa. Let me state this again 1978 Porsche 930 Targa. . . If you have to start googling to figure out the significance of this car, you're not alone, but this is probably not the car for you. This car belongs in the Porsche museum or with a major collector who understands the significance and value at this point of this description. Rewrite all those Porsche history books because this car isn't mentioned in any of them that I could find over the past couple years. The 930 Turbo Targa was not released to the public until 1987. Between 1987 and 1989 very low production numbers were produced worldwide and those are very rare and hard to find. This car predates that production run by a decade, being built on the assembly line in September of 1977. This car has extensive history, starting with ownership by Porsche from September 1977 to 1980. During it's time with Porsche it could be seen in it's original Olive Green color with license plate BB-JC-930. You can only speculate who may have been driving this around Germany being so unique and painted Olive Green. There is no proof of this, but one can speculate that this has a very high probability of being true. It's unknown to me the history of the car from 1980 to 1984, but in 1984 it was imported to the US by Konrad Racing. Since then the history is pretty clear and I have tons of documentation. Everyone who owned this since must have known it must be something unique because extensive records remain with the car. In the December 1994 issue of Excellence magazine this car was published titled "The Turbo Targa Porsche Never Built". Within the history that I have with the car are the handwritten notes from the owner at that time as well as hand written letters to Porsche inquiring about the car. Note that the magazine article was written prior to response letters from Porsche, so the article isn't 100% accurate or complete. The letters back from Porsche in response to those inquires is what makes this one of the rarest Porsches in the world. One of the lines in the letter says "Today we can state that your 911 Turbo Targa is the only 1978 model known in existence." (Porsche 09.01.1995) I'm not sure there are many other Porsche's that they can say that about and the ones that exist are well known and trade for millions of dollars.
At some point in the 80's this car was painted red, which still remains today. In my opinion this should be restored back to it's original Olive Green color and should be done by the best in the restoration business. There are many enthusiast that believe the car should remain as-is because it shows the history of it's existence and wear from it's past owners who all enjoyed this car as it was meant to be enjoyed. No garage queen here. The car is solid, straight, and you can see the original olive green color throughout the car in all the normal places that typically don't get painted, but also on all the body panels through the nicks and scratches that are everywhere on the car. This is significant to verify that this has all it's original steel body panels. The previous owner removed the steel box rockers from the car that can be seen in the magazine article, but I have them and they need to go back on once restored.
Porsche removed the original engine at the factory, which is the big mystery of this car. They claim in writing that it had the standard US version of the 3.3 liter turbo motor, but it begs the question of why they would remove a standard engine that has been tested and proven over an over again?I have the original numbers from (2) different COA's and from a letter from Porsche for the engine and transmission that they say was in the car from the factory for anyone who wants to search for it. This part of the story gets really interesting because the Vin # contains a 9 in fifth position, which is reserved to identify the engine type. The 9 can only be found in vin #'s 930.890.0001-930.890.0025, which are the 25 RSR 935 Grp 5 cars that were produced at this same time. Porsche states that they used the 9 on this car in that position because it was a non-production car. One can speculate that this may have carried an RSR motor and transmission at birth and that's why it was removed prior to selling. The car currently has a very strong running / sounding 3.3 Liter Turbo Engine with matching transmission with documentation that puts the mileage of both at around 28,000 miles. Personally, I would keep the current engine and transmission unless the full story of the original engine can be discovered and validated. I’m positive the original can be located through technology and databases if someone wanted to do that investigation.
The Vin # 930.891.0011 is also unique and a first for Porsche. As mentioned above, the 9 in the fifth position is unique for all other 930's, except the factory race cars. The 1 in the sixth position indicates Targa. All other 930's produced prior to this car have a 0 in that position for the coupe. The 11 at the end actually represents #1. There is not a 10 or 12 in this case. It's been explained to me that the first 10 chassis were used for testing and were destroyed during or after. #11 was built, then nothing until 1987.

To use the description of "1 of 1", "first", "only", "rarest", and "Porsche 930" in the same sentence is very significant for the brand that I've loved all my life and I'm sure you do as well if you've read this far. I'm a very busy Architect with a young family and a lot of other Porsches, who doesn't have time for the attention this car deserves. It's time to go to the right collector that will preserve / restore this piece of history to it's original awesomeness!
