1980 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Beautiful and rare, this first generation diesel manual 1980 Mercedes-BenzGeländewagen Wagon is a vintage SUV.

It is an early European model 4wd Diesel short wheelbase. With a five cylinder, 88HP naturally aspirated diesel engine. These motors have legendary reliability. It has a four-speed manual transmission with shift-on-fly 4X4, together with front and rear differential locks. The motor and transmission are good.

The lights and turn signals and heat work. No air conditioning. And, it has power steering.

When I purchased it in 2006, the odometer was inoperable. It reads 116561 km, which is roughly 102 miles. I’ve probably put 50,000/miles total.

It has a professionally installed veggie tank, which was so great to drive for free.

I maintained it well for years, except for the last 10 - 12 years I parked it outside and didn’t drive it.

Early Mercedes-Benz G-Wagons were designed with weld lines on the body panels. This is a characteristic of the vehicle’s boxy, utilitarian design and how it was manufactured at the time.

The welding process resulted in visible lines where the panels were joined, which is a feature of the G-Wagon’s distinct, rugged aesthetic. A previous owner piled lots of bondo overtop the weld lines and along the bottom of the doors. It’s cracking and chipping away.
