Mercedes 300CD Turbo Diesel ~ Rare Two Owner Historical Collectors Car
1983 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series
I love cars and theses old diesel W123 chassis Mercedes are one of the most enjoyable truly classic drivers cars. The fit and finish of everything is simple yet elegant, the reliability and comfort is practical & the gas mileage is respectable by any standard. If you haven't ever had the pleasure of working on one of these cars you would come to appreciate the ingenious but common sense design the German engineers had when creating this car. If you haven't ever had the pleasure of driving one of these fine automobiles, you have to experience it to truly appreciate it. I purchased this beautiful 1983 Mercedes 300cd along with another diesel Mercedes both of which I had been looking for quite some time. Unfortunately the newest addition to our family (Although very much wanted) was quite costly, much more expensive than we anticipated and I now have a lot of expenses to pay for and the reluctant assignment of selling off the cars I worked so hard to locate.
History:
The story of this car begins with a Russian immigrant who came to America to start a better life. Louis Kayer, an immigrant from Russia, purchased the now famous Baltimore Bakery in 1910, and renamed it after his wife Ada (Mama Kayer). With the help of Louis and Ada’s sons, John and Max Kayer, the bakery moved to its current location on Kingwood Avenue in Norfolk, Va. The name & address of this bakery is written into the Mercedes delivery documents. Fortunately, I was able to speak to one of the grandsons regarding the history of the car. As it turns out, it was his partners vehicle. The two partners each purchased a Mercedes 300CD from the showroom floor at the dealer in Richmond, VA. They purchased the cars for sales calls and wanted something safe and reliable. At the time, these cars were even more affordable than the gas models. According to the original owner, she paid just under $32,000 for the car. It was titled in the name of the bakery when it was delivered on January 17, 1983. The owners manual, warranty and service records all state clearly the ownership and history. The car was dealer serviced under the care of the landmark bakery for the next 5 years until it was traded to Phillips Olds Virginia Beac, VA. in 1988. Enter, the second owner...From what the daughter tells me her mom, Vivian, (the second owner) wanted to have her own car, paid for out of pocket with her own cash and so she did just that and on April 12th, 1988 she walked into the dealership, signed a contract & placed a $1000 deposit on the car. On April 14, 1988 she became the proud owner of this 1983 Mercedes, the odometer read 55,279 miles. Purchase Price: $19,598.36, yes I have the deposit receipt & purchase contract too. The car came with all books & records, properly stamped from Jan 1983 forward till 1988. The documentation on this classic is meticulous, it even still carries the data plate. I couldn't post the complete outline of the fastidious service history, so I took pictures of just some of the pages to show you as there are over 60 pages & receipts. As you can see from the few pages I selected, there wasn't nearly a month that passed that something wasn't completed, checked, cleaned or serviced. This is a seriously well documented two owner car. Included in the documentation is the original owners manual, Owners Service and Warranty Policy, operation card for the Automatic Climate Control, Operation Card for the cruise control, a Mercedes Dealer Directory, Pirelli Original Equipment Warranty, Mercedes Roadside Assistance brochure, the antenna cleaning cloth, the original Mercedes production Data sheet and the highly sought after data plate.
Condition:
I have been driving this car into the city of Milwaukee and to Chicago back and forth for a number of weeks now, sunroof open, windows down and radio playing and boy is it fun. Everything works on this car except for two things(one window switch for the right rear wing window and the passenger power mirror), the rest of the windows, the vacuum locks, the wipers, washers, sunroof, courtesy lighting, A/C, tachometer, cruise control, and yes even the clock works. Note: This car has spent 99.9% of its life in Virginia and has never seen salt or winters. The body and undercarriage testify to this as shown in the pictures and is an impeccable example for the age of the car. There is no rust, and no rot. This issoutherncar female driven 100% of its life. There are some door dings, nicks and touch ups which one would come to expect on an original 34 year un-restored car. There are some minor vibrations upon acceleration, likely from 1/2 shafts and or u-joints. The transmission shifts nicely and properly through all gears as it was just serviced with new fluid, filter. The rubber is also damaged and cracked from age and sunlight but does still function. Despite these aged items even going through the carwash you'll stay dry. The car has all of the original interior, carpet and floor mats. All of the glass is original factory Mercedes and it appears that the spare tire has never been on the road. The thing that the car could benefit from the most is a new paint job. The original paint on a scale from 1-10 is about a 3. It has crazing and splitting in the clear coat from age and sunlight. The sides of the car and the roof have it the worst. There are also some spots as shown in the pics where the clearcoat is entirely gone. This original petina although aged still gets a lot of looks and quite honestly is a low cost exterior to maintain going forward. Depending upon your need and usage you could drive it another 30 years just as it is. Even if you paid $4000 for a factory original paint job you'd still be into the car for a lot less than some of these other cars posted. Bottom line is, you havereliable classic appreciating car here with a fully documented and very cool history. Remember this is not a trailer queen, its an un-restored piece of history and its still drivable, reliableandthe body is ingreat shape. This purchase will just keep appreciating and will not brake the bank should you choose to restore it over time. Even if you put $10,000 into this beauty, it will still be less than some of the other CD's posted, but again, the best thing is...you don't have to. I also have the original set of keys.
Since I have owned the car I have completed the following as good maintenance:
New Wheel Bearings
New front Rotors
New front Ceramic brake Pads
New Rear Rotors
New Rear Ceramic Brake Pads
Refinished wheels
Re-Dyed Leather seats (front)
Lucas Oil Treatment
New Air Filter
Service Transmission
Service A/C
Professionally Clean & Detail

Defects:
Although the CARFAX, does not disclose any history of accidents, it appears in the documentation, that In December of 1991 there was some type of fender bender, you can deduct from the repair receiptdocuments that there was refinishing necessary on the right rear quarter. If you look closely you can see the DA marks just under the base coat and a paint line at the door seam. Since it isn't documented on CARFAX, its unlikely there was a police report which would lead me to believe that there was no significant damage. It's entirely possible that it may have even happened at home backing into or out of the garage or was a type of parking lot scrape. The cost of the repairs back in 1991 was just over $1000. Even in 1991 that would have been considered a minor repair on a Mercedes. Additionally, although the AC and climate control does wor, the AC compressor will require the air gap to be adjusted at the clutch, as it rubs against the clutch plate when it isn't engaged. Also, the radio antenna does not extend but powers up and as mentioned above the right wing window doesn't engage with the front switch.

Vehicle Representations, Disclosure & Common Sense
People, let’s talk here. This is a reminder to all bidders. By bidding on this vehicle you are entering into a contract and you are agreeing to follow the terms of the contract outlined herein, fore with and as stated. This vehicle is USED, not new. Please expect a certain amount of wear, use, and flaws as is standard on ANY used car. All used cars including this one may have: dings, dents, nicks, chips, glass marks, paint fading, paint scratches, previous paintwork, tire wear, rust, undercarriage wear and grime, wheel and rim imperfections, or any other issues that are associated with use that is consistent with age and mileage of the vehicle. Obviously a car that is 30+ years old will show more wear and have more flaws than one that is 5 years old.
This vehicle is sold AS-IS, Where-IS with No Warranty, expressed or implied. The seller shall not be responsible for correctness of description, authenticity, genuineness, or defects herein, and makes no warranty in connection therewith. Any and all descriptions or representations are for identification purposes only and are not to be construed as a warranty of any type. Your bid is binding under applicable statute. Therefore, I have clearly requested for your protection and mine that you please complete any and all inspections prior to bidding or during the timeframe of the auction. Hire a professional for your peace of mind. If you have a vehicle inspected and a problem is discovered that I was unaware of, I'll work with you, Let’s face it, if I wasn't a fair guy I wouldn't have a 100% rating for the last 14 years. The bottom line is I want you to be 100% satisfied. That said...(NO POST INSPECTIONS) The buyer assumes all responsibility for all defects known and unknown. The seller assumes no responsibility for any repairs, defects or damages pre-existing or otherwise regardless of any oral or written statements about the vehicle. The buyer has no right of rescission and is not entitled to any compensation for known or unknown, or disclosed, or undisclosed damage or repairs. Do not bid if you are not prepared to conclude your purchase. All information and comments contained within the vehicle listings are deemed reliable, but are not guaranteed. I do my best to make sure the descriptions are as accurate as possible. I want you to beexceptionally happy with your purchase but at the same time please understand what "AS-IS" means. It means sold without warranty - no exceptions. Remember this car is more than a decade old, nearly two decades and has in excess of 100,000 miles so it may be new to you but that doesn’t change the fact that it is a used car/truck and repairs can be needed at any time regardless of how short a time period you have owned the car. While I feel that I go above and beyond the typical vehicle serviced on eBay, the fact remains it is a used vehicle. It is still possible for used vehicles to need service or repairs the first days or weeks of ownership. Like Forest said "GUMP HAPPENS" All cars are used machines and used machines need general repairs on a regular basis many times without prior warning. Also repairs are more common on say a 15 year old model car as opposed to a 2 or 3 year old model car since they cost significantly less than a newer car. Obviously the older the car the more possible this is of happening. What you have just read is basically common sense, but there are some people who don’t understand this so this is for them & is why I have spelled it out in plain English, Thank You for listening & God Bless You sane people :)
