1968 Ford Mustang California Special GT/CS 390 S Code

1968 Ford Mustang GT/CS CALIFORNIA SPECIAL

EXTREMELY RARE 390 WITH 4 SPEED CAR

ONE OF ONE BUILT MUSTANG CALIFORNIA SPECIAL

This car is a must have Rare Special Edition Mustang that will only increase in value. I would go as far as stating this model is even more rare than the Shelby Mustangs produced from 1965 to 1970.

Up for sale is this beautiful 1968 Mustang GT/CS (California Special) S code 390 with 4 speed Mustang. She is showing off her Stock color of Candy Apple Red paint with Black Interior and ready for a new owner. If you see the S code in the 5th digit of the Vin then you know you are in for a treat.

In this case the letter “S” stands for the big block 390 GT engine that was ordered and installed with a 4 speed from the factory. Only 111 Mustangs were ordered with this combination in the California Special option making this truly rare. How many of the 111 actually have survived the past 50 years? When was the last or in some cases the first time you have ever seen one?The Marti report break down on this car shows it was an export car to Canada. Also adding to her rarity is the fact this car is a 1 of 1 car produced due to the options ordered. Please view Marti Report in pictures. Not all California Specials were GT’s, this is a true GT and as some owners of these rare cars call it a Triple GT. That is explained as having the 390 GT engine, having the GT equipment group as outlined in the Marti Report and being one of the 4118 California Special GT/CS produced. This is truly one rare Collector Mustang.

Beautiful restoration completed on this vehicle that included an engine rebuild and now with just under 20,000 miles on the engine she is still ready for her next adventure with a new owner cruising the roads and shows.

This is a matching numbers car with vin stamped into the engine. (see vin in photos, stamped on back of engine, unknown if transmission is stamped with vin due to location of stamping but vehicle came equipped with a 4 speed, and was told by prior owner that the car has a matching numbers drivetrain)

The vehicle is equipped with the Marchal Fog light option giving the car a very nice look compared to the later production Lucas Fog light option. The vehicle is equipped with a dual horn system operated by a switch under the dash (normal horn and an aruga horn sound). This California Special also comes with GT/CS embroidered floormats and with aframedDeluxe Marti Report so you can explain to everyone how these rare horses were built and how rare this one truly is. The vehicle further has had added headers instead of standard exhaust manifolds to allow the engine to breath better. Due to being an export to Canada car this was a Non-Emissions System vehicle, meaning no smog pump. Other standard options for this GT/CS are Power Steering, Power Disc Brakes in Front, Remote Control Driver Mirror, and Center Console.

The GT/CS design is founded in the SHELBY AMERICAN lineage:

Between 1967 and 1968 Carroll Shelby produced two prototype Shelby GT500 Coupes, nicknamed “Little Red” and the “Green Hornet”. Shelby American had a desire to add a coupe to the Shelby line for 1968 but production limitations made that an impracticality. Ford Motor Company capitalized on the vision and produced their own Shelby inspired coupe utilizing Shelby’s design and Shelby production parts. The GT/CS was born and was a promotional marketing tool aimed at the Southern California car market calling it the “California Special”. The purpose was to showcase how a Mustang could be ordered directly from the factory. But it turned out owners of other States put in their orders as well as another Country (Canada). Clearly this High Output GT390 big block with the GT/CS Shelby appearance package option with its integrated rear spoiler, side scoops, vinyl striping, special grill, hood locks, fog lights, special taillights, etc was on the wild side of any 1968 factory produced car at that time!

The last picture in the Gallery displays Little Red and the Green Hornet restored today. They are Priceless.
