1940 Chevrolet Master Deluxe
1940 Chevrolet Master Deluxe
In 1938 The Chevrolet Motor company offered an upscale version of the Master (AKA the HB) and The Master Deluxe (AKA the HA) sedan. This was a popular car selling over 302,000 units, so a lot of examples survive. First popular with hot rodders because of the availability of parts, and the ease of replacing the engine, many versions and interpretations survive today.
This example of the 1940 Coupe has had many modifications from the original to create a unique vehicle, while maintaining the original overall shape, with an updated Camaro subframe. And probably the most noticeable feature, look ma! No headlights on the fenders! They have been moved to inside the grille. Different but definitely gives it an interesting look.
Exterior
Bathed in 2001 VW Bug Vtech 200 Beige single stage paint which covers virtually all surfaces and shows up nicely. Looking at the lines of this car one can definitely see that the top has been chopped to the tune of 3 inches. Still maintaining its original line on the fender side, as well as still making use of the running boards, the car save for shaved bumpers, holds the line on its line! As noted, but deserves another mention, the headlights have been relocated to behind the grille. 15" rally wheels and front 205/65R15 tires and 29 x 18.0 x 15 Mickey Thompson Sportsman SR fatties are on the back. This car has been tubbed to accommodate the wide rear tires, and with this action the back seat had to take an innovative approach to still remain...
Interior
Starting with the rear seat, it has been changed to a single center curved back rear seat., which could best be described as a wingless wingback chair that has a couch seat. This is an interesting solution to the tubbing problem that created this workaround. You know what they say necessity of the mother of invention and this is right there with that statement. Upfront sports 2 late model cloth buckets in matching blue and are power and have seatbelts, which is a good thing because wait till you read the drivetrain section. In between is a B&M Quick Silver shifter. Upfront is a totally re-configured dash with working gauges, and Vintage air that needs a recharge plus a JVC Stereo Radio. This is fronted by an SS billet style wheel. Door panels also contain a unique feature in the form of billet aluminum handles that have been machined into a combination pull and armrest with horizontal ribs and ending in some flames. Power window switches can be seen here and the original re-chromed door opener is here, all this menagerie is mounted within matching blue tuck and roll cloth door panels.
Drivetrain
Pulling the interior release and lifting the hood we are met with the money shot. The heart of this hot rod a 402ci Big Block Chevy from what consigner states as 1972. We surmise this because the stampings have been ground off. Deep inside is a mild cam, oval port heads, an 800 CFM carburetor, sitting atop a Weiand Team G intake. Providing the fire is an HEI distributor. All this running smoothly on 15W-50W Mobil 1 Synthetic. A 400 Turbo automatic transmission is bolted on back, which pushes power back to a Chrysler 8.75 rear with 2.94 gears. All this presents really nicely within the confines of the restored engine bay.
Undercarriage
During the rodding modding, a 1969 Camaro sub frame was added to contain the extra HP's. All underneath looks nicely done with no surface rust, just nice paint, and some scratching on the frame from bottoming out. No leaks, and suspension is independent upfront, and leaf spring on the rear. Disc brakes are in front, and drums in the rear.
Drive-Ability
Lighting the fire will bring a rumble to your belly. Fasten your seatbelt, as this Street Rod has some guts. It shifts smoothly and accelerates like it wants to run away from home. Suspension provided a smooth ride, and it was certainly loud! Steering was power as were brakes, and made it an easy driver
A very interesting and unique to say the least street rod. Truly a one of a kind head turner, and neck snapper, this car will definitely keep you glued to your seat for the entirety of the ride. Nicely done, and I'll sit in back next time.
