1970 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon

Former show car through 2015 * ultra rare Samba! * entire inside replaced with solid wood by master carpenter.
Former show vehicle up to 201, then sold to me from retired first owner, off his farm. Though I too am decades past my VW westfalia van life years and too arthritic to regularly drive it, this camper was the nicest I had ever seen and could not pass it up as a future gift for my children. It has been stored and in a garage for maybe 2 years. The kids haven't caught the VW bug like I had all my life...so it seems we shall sell her. The inside is amazing. The original owners son was a master carpenter who removed all the heavy fake pressboard wood and replaced it with gleaming solid pine. It looks as if it came that way! The father was a mechanic and car collector. I don't know anything about mechanics anymore, but I know that it looks gorgeous and was well cared for. I did purchase an icebox/sink from an original camper package, just to have that option. Interior comes with both package, the custom matching cabinets and camper package ice box/sink.Included: ladder for upstairs that sleeps 2, stool original, cabinets, and ice box, most netting, several extras. Manual original I think. Rare Imported gear shifter knob.
This is a Samba Sportsmobile. which is rare in that the pop top goes straight up, which is great for more room upstairs and solar panels later if u want. The upstairs has a 2 person mattress bed not just a cot!There is a label that says : Sports mobile, PenthouseWhich is the type of camper package added In the US (Indiana) after made & shipped from Germany.
Original owner installed interior outlets (2)Water storage container is like new, many camping supplies included like new: dishes, fan, silverware, stove. Exterior plug means you just plug her in and have power inside!This was primarily used for long camping trips, car shows and VW club events
I am Not mechanical at all, and purchased this then parked it. So I cant say anything to the mechanical except these things I have observed:
I did test drive it for some time and it seemed perfect in speed, shifting, and the brakes felt new but I think that is because the owner had modified the braking system to improve it and have two wheels with disc brakes. So the brakes really worked and felt great...none like I had before on my previous 68-74 vw campers. He did this because they camped in the mountains and he felt it needed extra safe breaking power.
I did drive it from one state to the next. Just before arriving home the green light flickered on so I immediately at that moment pulled over.( I blew a 66 bug engine years ago and well you never drive if a light goes on.) So I opened the engine compartment and it was too hot to the touch. I let it cool off and was able to continue on home. . So before driving it for 10 hours straight on highways you should fix that. I know zero so it could normal, or be $25 bucks, or be a lot... but I don't think a lot because it sounded felt looked and worked great otherwise.
The gas gauge doesn't work. The owner told me that, and included a new gas gauge in the box, which is included. He was a mechanic all his life but was too old at that point to do it.
The little light mounted on the inside of pop top is not there, think its in the camper. Costs $30 maybe if you need it. I have a very cool lantern style light instead in the vehicle.
The rubber edge trim around back window is hard in spots and dry and should be replaced I think. There is a tiny bit of surface rust near i, which is an easy thing but should be done to keep the vehicle well kept.
the antenna broke off recently by my family member accidentallyone hubcap missing, my husband misplaced it while changing the tiresone safari window has a screen the other doesn't those are $185ish if you want to add it, though it's not necessary or even noticeable, unless camping in hot weather.
the front left driver mirror had a crack and I think there is a new mirror in the van in a box. $10
Since it hasn't been driven since I bought it the gas should be removed and all tha, battery may need a charge or maybe its new?, things like that
The interior woodwork is beautiful and I have never seen anything like it. The custom paint job, amazing wood work, most expensive upholstery available that looks stock, I think the canvas is also excellent, and the high end upgrades the owner did like the 2 disc brakes and I think a special oil cooling system was added too, I felt confidant in the vehicle. It was one of the most well loved ones I have seen that's not a total like new restoration.I could take it to a local German mechanic to certify it and do whatever to get it ready for travel...but instead I figured selling it for a lower price so someone can guaranty it how they see fit and even a guaranty from a mechanic over ebay is no guaranty.
What I like about it:I like having a sliding door that safely latches and locks verses the more dangerous models that have double doors that can pop open. I like have 2 beds that both sleep two, having just a cot upstairs is rather uncomfortable to sleep on and limits the space a lot in campers so I only owned the ones with a full upstairs bed.I like that the pop top goes straight up for a more roomy feeling and nice cross breeze. It is a nice design for solar panels which are nowadays super thin and light, but then the panels could get sun without having to move the van around all day to follow the sun pathway.I like the nice upholstery because it looks great and seems heavy and durable. Cheap upholstery doesn't hold up and sticks to the skin.I like the standard vw engine and learned never to buy the flat pan engine as they are hard to get parts for or work on. This is the standard vw engine which in my oppinion is the easiest and cheapest of all engines to maintain.Insurance is $16 a month. Can't beat that! These cars are considered ultra safe for driving and camping in.The colors and wood are beautiful, instead of many of the louder VW colors and plaids
