Debuted at the 1969 Frankfurt Auto Show and first available for 1970, the 914 was Porsches successor to the 912 and Stuttgarts new competitor to the growing ranks of sports cars from Datsun, Fiat, MG, and Triumph. Developed under Ferdinand A. Butzi Porsche, the 914 was rooted in sketches by Hans Gugelot and featured a distinctive Karmann-built body with removable Targa roof and built-in roll bar. Initially powered by a fuel-injected 1.7-liter engine and five-speed gearbox, the 914 featured a wide array of exterior colors with standard painted bumpers, with chrome bumpers, a vinyl roll-bar covering, and numerous other options.
Boasting near-perfect weight distribution, outstanding handling, and quickness belying its small-displacement engine, the 914 was a revelation to drive. Constant improvements were made in Porsche tradition, including a larger 96 HP, 2.0-liter engine and other updates by 1973, resulting in what many enthusiasts consider the most desirable 914 model. At launch, the 914 was named Import Car of the Year by Motor Trend, which hailed the 914 ...the first modern sports car for the masses. The 914s influence remains profound today, with its DNA echoed by Porsches own Boxster since 1997.
Finished in factory-correct Code LKL 96 B Alaska Blue Metallic paint, this 1973 Porsche 914 is a former Texas car that benefits from a recent restoration and fresh engine rebuild. Following acquisition by the current owner, it received nearly $26,000 in further sorting and service work at Perfect Power in Buffalo Grove, Illinois. Every one of the Porsches mechanical systems were addressed in the 140-hour process, including a gearbox overhaul, replacement of the flywheel and clutch, and replacement of the factory EFI system in favor of a pair of 44 IDF Weber carburetors. This car has undergone a 5-lug wheel conversion, equipped with a set of Maxilite Fuchs wheels. Subtle backdates included with the car: The front bumper was rechromed without holes for mounting the rubber tits, giving it a cleaner 914-6 look. European front and rear tail light lenses, and the round side markers were removed from the body, giving it the cleaner look which the designers intended. The result of all the effort and expense is an unusually well sorted Porsche 914 with outstanding response and a great driving experience. Other choice upgrades include aluminum door sills, Momo competition steering wheel and digital Blaupunkt stereo head unit. A full-size spare tire, operating instructions from the prior owner, and detailed invoices for the recent comprehensive service work are included with the sale of this exceedingly well-sorted and enjoyable 1973 Porsche 914.
