DESCRIPTION

If you are one my regular followers on eBay, Facebook, Instagram, or just here at the store, you know that I have had some of the nicest, FACTORY BUILT Porsche Speedsters over the years from Beck, Vintage, Intermeccanica, and Specialty. As nice as they all were, I always had an eye out for one of the original 600 or so Intermeccanica Speedster replicas built in the late 70’s.
I found it with this car, and have to say that all of the praise heaped upon these rare units is more than deserved!
All the little details gone into the fabrication of this machine add up to one of the most fun to drive, stable, sturdy, and well-crafted Porsche Speedster Replica’s I have ever had the pleasure to drive.
From what we can ascertain from the spouse and family of the prior owner, the car had lived in The Hamptons from 1979 to 1990, and then spent a little over a decade in Dallas, TX before they purchased it in 2003 and brought it Florida for seasonal use at their waterfront home on the East Coast. After illness prohibited use of the cars manual transmission, the car was tucked away in the garage for over a year before I purchased it in February of 2015, and we painstakingly went through it to make sure that the new owner would have just as fond an ownership experience as the previous owners did.
The car wears what appears to be its original Glacier Blue finish, that is glossy, clean, and slick to this day, with only the most modest signs of use from the past 37 years.
A few stone chips, light scuffs, a small hairline crack or mark, and a handful of spots which were touched up over the years by the prior owners are the only real issues with the finish on the car, and as you can see in the 65 EXTRA-LARGE photos below, none of them detract from the overall appearance of the Speedster.
Chrome and bright work on the car is in astonishingly good condition, with only the windshield surround, wiper arms, and exhaust tips showing any real signs of patina and aging.
The bumpers are monochromatic to the cars finish. They still show wonderfully, with only a couple prior touch-up spots to speak of.
Horn grills, signal lights, outside mirror, headlamps, trim rings, hood pull with PORSCHE Crest, side trim, rocker trim, tail lamp trim, rear plate bracket and light, and engine vent and luggage rack all look fantastic, and all of the gold SPEEDSTER, PORSCHE, and 1600 emblems throughout the car show as new. Even the right side REUTTER Badge looks magnificent!
The 5.5” wide chrome front wheels are in like new condition, as are the center caps, while the 4.5” wide rear wheels show a few spots of light patina in the creases. These may very well just disappear when you get the car professionally detailed, but I could not remove them with just QUICKSHINE Spray and a towel. I have highlighted them in the photos, and it really isn’t much to worry about as you can see.
Tires are recent additions to the car to replace a much older set, and they are in exceptional condition with an estimated 200 miles on them, and no damage or disrepair.
The driver door opens to reveal Intermeccanica steel hinges, and the prior owner sourced OEM style KARMANN body tags and VIN plates to grace the driver door jamb and inner pad.
The Navy blue leather door panels with map pockets are in exceptional condition, as are the matching leather seats and E-Brake access boots.
The car is equipped with a matching Navy leather jump seat for anyone who dares hop in back for a quick cruise to town! It is easily removable to have the carpeted floor as luggage space for that weekend road trip too!
Banded Navy carpeting is in remarkable condition, and shows the faintest signs of wear for all the years of service.
Heater control arm is in very good condition, as are the vent sliding doors on the driver and passenger sides.
Door pulls look fantastic and function perfectly, as do the ivory tone pulls for the wiper and headlamps.
A chrome 3-spoke wood rimmed Nardi themed wheel shows wonderfully, and includes the Porsche crest.
Dash is clean and presents wonderfully. It is fit with VDO gauges for Speedo/Odometer, center TACH, and right side warning lamp/fuel gauge. All appear to be functional and calibrated.
The rear view mirror and its attachment arm show light patina, but still are more than serviceable, just not up to the level of the rest of the cars trim.
Dash grab bar and SPEEDSTER emblem are in exceptional condition.
Pull the under dash release for the bonnet and the lift strut that was added to the car pushes it open on the Intermeccania stamped hinges to reveal more of the clean, banded Navy carpet wall to wall, including the underside of the bonnet lid. It all shows quite well, especially considering that the car has NOT been detailed formally!
Lifting up the carpet reveals the well for the battery, which was the location selected after the first 250 cars were produced, and remained throughout the Santa Ana production period on the later models.
Battery is clean, neat, and fully charged for use.
The weather seal on the bonnet is in exceptional condition, and keeps out the elements as intended.
The canvas convertible top is in exceptionally good condition, mainly due to the fact that it has basically been down and stored for most of the cars life! It snaps and clips into place easily, and has no damage, holes, or issues. A quick detail should make it show like new as well, and the back window is clean and undamaged from time.
Side curtains and the pouch they are stored in are in exceptional condition as well, and have been in storage for the same duration.
The matching blue vinyl full tonneau is in good condition, but does show a mark or two from being in place most of the time. It connects to protect the entire cockpit, and zips open to allow one or two people to have easy access to the cars interior. Zip it closed and tuck it evenly beind the seats for a standard tonneau that looks fantastic too!
Open the engine cover, and it raises on the Intermeccanica stamped hinges to reveal a clean, neat, and tidy engine bay stuffed with a freshly refurbished 1600cc VW motor that shows as nicely as the rest of the car.
Equipped and set up for longevity and ease of maintenance and use, the rousing performance of this power plant will certainly make you feel like more than 100 estimated horses are galloping with you down the road.
The engine was removed, stripped, cleaned, and completely rebuilt, and then driven about 150 miles and checked again before we felt confident in offering it for sale.
The venerable VW design is practically fail safe, and the car is fit with all new components as you can see in the photos, as well as an upgraded intake and dual carb system for a little extra added power.
Idle is smooth and clean, and the car starts up with ease each and every time.
Throttle response it quick, so be careful with your right foot, as the powerband is quite responsive!
With a curb weight of approximately 1500 pounds, you can imagine that acceleration is one of this cars strong suits! It will quickly shuffle through the refurbished “freeway flyer” and get to a GPS measured 100mph if you’re feeling saucy!
Transmission shifts smoothly and cleanly, and the clutch travel and feel is smooth and issue free.
The car exhibits healthy performance, and has no known mechanical or operational issues as of this time. It is a joy to drive, and has proven to be reliable both in town, and on a longer 130 mile round trip.
Thanks to the features almost exclusive to the IM cars, like a reinforced monocoque body that gets bolted to the shortened VW pan, and a full boxed steel subframe, ride and handling rival the original while leaving Beck and Vintage cars scrambling to hang with you in the twisties.
Rigid and taut, the whole car takes the corner with you, with none of the wallow of some of the other brands. This gives you the confidence to push your driving that much farther, allowing the car to really shine.
IM’s exclusive use of aluminum and steel reinforcements, bolt-through accessories, and aircraft grade alloy plates and extrusions throughout the car add to the solid overall feel and quality ownership experience.
Brakes on the car have been cleaned, replaced, and/or refurbished and are in proper working order. They stop the car without any unusual pulling, wander, or excess fade.
The swing axle rear is in proper working order as well, and in conjunction with some new parts for it as well as the front, the car rides and handles crisply and cleanly.
Steering box is dialed in, and the car has a really nice connected feel to your hands when you are steering. Minimal play, and short lock-to-lock make the car a blast to pilot!
All of the lights, wipers, and turn signals are currently in proper working order, and everything on the car does what it should.
The undercarriage is clean, and has been treated to a light rustproofing of some kind over the years. It is not thick, and you can clearly see the pans, access hardware for any components, and easily see that the car is rust, rot, patch panel, and issue free underneath. I suppose it provides some level of sound deadening as well, but it might be a fun weekend project to remove it all with a scraper should you choose to.
Overall, this is an extremely high-quality example of what AutoWeek magazine said in 1978 was “the equal to any Speedster that ever rolled off the assembly line in Germany”. That about sums it up!
