1967 Pontiac Firebird 400 Convertible

This uber-clean 1967 Pontiac Firebird convertible may look subtle, but it packs a 400 cubic inch punch under its pointed hood. Even better, this Poncho is equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes and a comfortable A/C interior, turning this lovely convertible into a cross-country cruiser that's turn-key and ready for action. Clean 1st generation Firebirds don't come up often, and they never last long. Take a closer look while you have the chance...

According to the trim tag, this droptop was originally Coronado Gold, which even as a custom factory paint was a bit too drab for the former owners, so in 2019 the finish was upgraded to bright GM Summit White. Shiny and very fresh, it was applied to a great standard, giving the car a clean, crisp look that definitely has an appeal as a high-end driver. Good bodywork underneath surely helps, and the crease that runs from nose to tail is crisply defined and the gills in the quarter panels are a cool contrast that helps break up the otherwise smooth body. The car is very straight and all the gaps are good, which can be a challenge on a ragtop, and it's thankfully devoid of stripes or add-on spoilers that would spoil the effect. Instead, this car isn't trying too hard and simply lets the hardware do the talking. There's nice chrome, too, including the pointed front bumper/grille assembly and the Firebird emblems are crisply rendered. Sure, there's plenty of F-body DNA there, but the Firebird has a very distinct flavor that's different from the Camaro, which is why it's always had such a fervent following.

The light gray bucket seat interior is a solid combination of preserved and restored pieces, with vinyl seat covers front and rear that show a few signs of use (although a good detail would go a long way), newer black carpets and black door panels, and a no-nonsense look all around. The dash pad and center console could easily be the originals pieces, along with the three-spoke steering wheel just ahead of the driver. Inside the middle console, the T-handle shifter is linked to a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission, which not only makes it easier to drive but also means you don't have to deal with an old GM clutch. New Dakota Digital gauges were installed into the factory pods are provide a much more exact read-out of the vitals from the 400 V8 ahead. A modern Pioneer AM/FM/CD/AUX head unit was installed into the factory slot and provides the tunes, and even though this is an A/C car with a newer Vintage Air system with R134a hardware, it needs to be serviced to blow cold. The black convertible top is a perfect contrast to the white paint, and it's in fantastic condition because it was installed in 2019 when the car was painted, and has rarely been used since.

A 400 cubic inch V8 makes this rather lightweight F-body feel very fast on the street, with this one reported to have been fully rebuilt in 2019. It topped the Camaro's 396 by four cubes but the bottom-end torque of the Poncho is where it really shines. Topped with a stock intake manifold and 2-barrel carburetor, it's got instantaneous throttle response and long-tube headers bolster an already robust torque curve. It's neatly detailed with a chrome air cleaner, power brake booster system, and valve covers and Pontiac Light Blue paint on the block, and the satin black engine bay makes a perfect backdrop. A big aluminum radiator doesn't seem to mind the big engine's heat and the droptop has great road manners with power 4-wheel discs and power steering that make it easy to drive. The chassis is quite solid thanks to a life spent in the desert and American South, and an X-pipe dual exhaust with Pypes mufflers sounds absolutely fantastic. A sturdy TH350 3-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and spins a heavy-duty 12-bolt rear end out back. 17-inch PMD wheels set the stance and finish off the look, and they're wrapped in staggered 245/40/17 front and 285/40/17 Continental performance radials with plenty of tread.

Lots of fun to drive with a look that turns heads and carries a big stick, this Firebird droptop more than delivers on the promises made by its look. Call today!
