Description:

1961 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight

1961 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Convertible, 66,700 original miles, runs great.
Original condition, one family owner car. Great driver as-is, or good candidate for a full restoration. Very intact and straight car, has some prior rust repair in the rocker panels and lower front fenders. Floors, trunk and frame are solid but have flaky surface rust in some areas.
This is the top-of-the-line, long-wheelbase convertible for Olds for 1961.
Recently passed NYS Safety Inspection, is reliable and starts, runs and drives very well. All lights and signals work. All power windows work, glass is all good.
Local car, previously owned by a little old lady (really) who lived 4 miles from me. I met her in 1985 and asked to buy the car, but she was still driving at the time and did not want to sell. More than 30 years later I purchased the car from her granddaughter. The way you see the car now is pretty much how it looked 30 years ago. Apparently, sometime in the 1970’s the car got new paint in the correct original color (Fawn Mist), new top, seat covers, and carpet. The original tri-tone leather interior is under the covers, but presumably is somewhat worn. Has a glass rear window which is zipped down in the photos.
Mechanically the 394 V8 runs perfect – no knocks, no miss. Smooth and quiet. 3-speed Hydramatic shifts like it should, is in good operating condition, no issues. Driveline is quiet, no noises. Has a pinion seal leak, a new seal comes with the car.
New radial tires
New fuel pump & fuel filter
New metal brake lines
Newly rebuilt wheel cylinders & repacked front wheel bearings
New muffler
New valve cover gaskets
New vacuum advance
Recent tune up with platinum plugs
Recent oil service and grease job
Carburetor idle mixture and ignition timing adjusted
The 61 Olds is one of the sleekest convertibles out there – the styling is Jet-Age inspired. It is one of very few cars that have “skeg” fins that project downward rather than the more common upright dorsal fin styling on most 1950s and early 1960s cars. This styling cue is mirrored to the front bumper, and the dashboard styling as well. Other cool features include the “Safety Spectrum” speedometer that shows bright green from 0-35, orange from 35-65 and bright red at 65-120 MPH.
The 1961 98 convertible was a very low production car, only 3,804 units were built out of a total of 317,967 Oldsmobiles that year. Excellent investment potential. Values are rising on these cars and good examples are very difficult to find. Perfect car for a first-time old car buyer, is ready to roll and enjoy. Or for a serious enthusiast looking for a car to restore, this is a great start. Some of the other remaining examples of this car are badly rusted out hulks that are being pulled from fields after sitting for decades. Start with something decent like this and you’ll end up with a much better car in the end.
