Description:

1976 International Harvester Scout II Traveler

Very solid and original 1976 International-Harvester Scout II Traveler which has spent it's life in the desert Southwest and only has very light rust (especially by Scout standards). It had been sitting in our dry climate for almost 30 years (last titled and on the road in 1991) needing a transmission rebuild when I found it. I had the transmission rebuild completed, replaced the battery, fuel pump and starter, had the carb adjusted and she fired right up.
The exterior is in really good condition with the only rust located on a small section of the quarter panels (coated with a rust reformer so it won't spread). This is easily fixable with patch panels readily available in the aftermarket or just leave it as is. It was painted in primer long ago in anticipation of a respray that never happened. And it shows no signs of any accident history. The only dents are minor ones consistent with day to day use. Removable fiberglass hardtop is in good shape but latch button is missing so it is temporarily secured with a rubber strap. All glass is good and doors open and close very solidly. Most exterior lights still work.
The interior is all original and has aged well except for the upholstery and dash pad. The dash itself is in great shape with no cutting or butchery of any kind other than a small aftermarket switch installed to the left of the steering wheel. All buttons and knobs are still in place and all gauges work as do windshield wipers. Windows roll up and down properly (regulators could use lubrication). The only rust-through is on a small portion of the passenger floorboard (again, patch panels are readily available in the aftermarket if you choose to go that route). I coated all surface rust with a rust reformer so it won't spread.
The running gear is in good shape with a 304cid V8 (dual exhaust and turbo mufflers) and 727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission running through a Dana 20 transfer case to Dana 44 differentials front (Warn hubs) and rear (factory locking diff). The reason it was parked so long was that a transmission rebuild was started but never finished. My buddy the transmission expert (he used to have his own shop) finished the rebuild and reinstalled the transmission and now it works properly. It also has a new battery, starter and fuel pump. Gas tank needs to be cleaned out so I rigged up a temporary two gallon tank under the hood. Tire and wheels look good but are old and best considered rollers. Heater radiator has been bypassed. I'd recommend rebuilding and adjusting the carb to your altitude/climate and changing all fluids before using it as a regular driver. Currently I have the idle adjusted high (until carb is rebuilt and adjusted to your altitude/climate) which increases throttle pressure to the transmission causing a clunk when shifting into reverse.
This is a really nice Scout II Traveler. It's all stock and original with near rust-free bones and it runs and drives pretty decently. It could be a daily driver without too much work. And the issues are all minor and easily fixable. I hope it ends up with someone who will preserve it and simply use and enjoy it as is. Cool, vintage Scout's like this can be restored over and over but are only original once. Just my two cents.
