1968 Shelby GT500KR Convertible Tribute

Outstandingly executed Mustang Shelby GT500KR Convertible clone fitted with date-code correct 428ci Cobra Jet Ram Air V8, 4-speed top loader transmission, power disc brakes, power rack and pinion steering, 9″ rear end, NOS Shelby 10-spoke alloy wheels, and more!

Shelby production was taken in-house under Ford control by 1968 with production moved to Ionia, Michigan. This change allowed for more insight and development from the Ford execs during the production process, and better overall quality control. This also meant a few design changes that year that included a front end with relocated intake scoops pushed out to the hood edge with twist locks, and the addition of rear-positioned hood louvers for better engine heat dispersion. The grill was now highlighted in polished trim with rectangle Marchal or Lucas fog lamps still positioned inside. Ford also introduced the new FE 428 Cobra Jet V8 engine, and once fitted with Ram Air intake, it became the GT500KR, which stood for "King of the Road”! Only 933 KR fastbacks would be built, along with just 318 KR convertibles. These Shelby GT500KR Convertibles are the rarest of all big block Shelby 500's produced, making them incredibly desirable for serious Mustang enthusiasts. Unfortunately for the majority of us budget-minded collectors, their prices have now far exceeded $225,000 for properly restored examples, making them unattainable for most. This professionally built example you are about to review is an expertly produced tribute to an original, often referred to as a clone, with some upgrades along the way!

We are very pleased to offer this 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR Convertible tribute finished in its factory issued correct Candyapple Red over Saddle Vinyl interior! Starting with an outstanding rust free convertible as the basis for the build, owner Steve Sinclair of Glenburn, ME teamed up with Shelby expert and restorer Bruce Farnsworth to build an outstanding replica of an original! Starting with all the correct body work to include fiberglass hood and decklid with quarter extensions, body side scoops, they sourced an original set of NOS 10-spoke Shelby alloy wheels, an original dash with proper instrumentation including tachometer, correct center console with Cobra embossed armrest and Stewart Warner "green stripe" oil pressure gauge and amp meter! The fitment of the body panels and shut lines are very tight, and the final paintwork truly show worthy! Everything on the car is new, including weather stripping, wiring, fuel delivery system & gas tank, suspension components with Gas-A-Just shocks, new control arms, springs, bushings, ball joints, etc.; complete interior carpet & upholstery, glass back convertible top & boot cover, tires, exhaust, and more!

The date-code correct 428ci Cobra Jet FE engine was sent to Bob Dorr of RPM Specialties for a total rebuild in August 2008. During this process, only hand selected performance products were used. The block was thoroughly cleaned and hot tanked for preparation. It maintains a Ford crankshaft turned .010/.010 and polished, then mated with Speed Pro Pistons with Sealed Pro rings, Ford connecting rods, Crane Cams Powermax 272 high lift camshaft, Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum heads, Crane Cams shaft-mount rocker arms, Engine Pro rod & main bearings, Ford Racing oil pump, Edelbrock timing chain & gear, Edlebrock dual plane aluminum intake manifold, Holley 770cfm Street Avenger dual feed carburetion, Edelbrock Victor Series aluminum water pump, billet pulleys, and heavy duty 7-blade clutch fan! Topping off the engine is the proper Ram Air assembly and Cobra Lemans style aluminum valve covers to commemorate the 1967 & 1968 wins over Ferrari at Lemans! Dyno-tuned and tested, it was rated at a very streetable 421 horsepower and 487 lb. ft. of torque!

This perfect balance of power is delivered to the correct Ford 9" rear axle by way of a 4-speed top loader manual transmission with Hurst shifter and new Center Force dual fiction clutch, flywheel, & pressure plate! Additional upgrades include the incredible sounding Hooker long tube headers, 2.5" exhaust, Flower Master Series 40 mufflers, X-pipe, and 3" chrome quad style exhaust tips! The billet distributor operates electronic ignition doing away with the finicky points. The steering was upgraded to Total Control Products (TCP) power assisted rack & pinion system along with the traditional Shelby Drop suspension for enhanced handling! Braking comes provided by power front disc brakes with excellent performance!

It is very nicely detailed throughout, and fresh in appearance in every way. Although completed in approximately 2010, it has only been enjoyed doing the limited driven season offered in Maine for just 1,300 miles! Totally broken in and absolutely ready for enjoyment! Cobra seat belts, emblems, Shelby identification, rear LED sequential turn signals, proper under hood & trunk stickers really bring this car to the street with the visual credentials of the real thing, but at a fraction of the cost! Please feel free to call with questions. We know a wise collector will act on this tribute Shelby convertible quickly! We look forward to working with you!
