As early Porsche 911s continue to grow in value, we are beginning to see movement from classic BMWs. The 2002s have started to see a shift, as have the E9 coupes. Many collectors and enthusiasts are beginning to see these GT coupes as a great alternative to some of the other vintage sports cars. They are extremely comfortable and make excellent choices for long vintage touring events as well as daily driving duty. These really are great addition to anyone's early German automotive collection.
This BMW was manufactured on March 3rd, 1970 and delivered to Max Hoffman Motors Corp., NY on March 13th, 1970. It was purchased new in July of 1970 from a Los Angeles BMW dealer. The original owner was a British ex-patriot who was formerly a factory driver for MG Motor Company. He relocated to Southern California and decided this 2800CS would make the perfect daily driver. For the next 32-years, he kept impeccable records of every single service. The receipts are extensive. During his ownership, he put over 180,000 miles on this car. There were never any accidents or issues. It was simply his daily driver that he serviced religiously. In the early 1990's, he retired and moved from Los Angeles to San Diego. From there, this BMW became a part time driver. However, he continued the excellent maintenance regiment.
Finally, well into his 80's, he sold the car in 2002 to a very well respected BMW restoration specialist in San Diego. This owner loved the condition of the car and its single owner history. He remarked that it was one of the straightest and driest E9s he had seen. Although it had high miles, he noticed that it was very well cared for and extremely original. So, he decided to do a partial restoration. When this owner purchased the car, it had been painted white from its original Tundra Metallic (068). He stripped the car to the bare metal and decided to repaint it factory Polaris Silver. While the paint was off, he said that there was zero rust or rot and no signs of damage. He did some mechanical freshening up as well. Upon completing the restoration, he sold the car to his best friend who lived in Colorado.
For the several years, this owner enjoyed the car as a weekend fair-weather cruiser before selling it to another enthusiast in 2008. The next owner decided to bring this Coupe to the next level and gave it a complete mechanical upgrade, which included the following:
3.5L fuel injected straight 6 engine (from late 80's 735i/E32)
4-wheel disc brakes
14" factory Alpina wheels (original examples/not reproductions)
Petri steering wheel
Original period-correct Hella fog lamps (not wired)
5-Speed manual Getrag gearbox
Carl Nelson Performance Kit:
Bilstein struts and shocks
Suspension Technique springs and sways bars
Upgraded 3.0 CS rear disc brakes and trailing arms
Shortly after completing these upgrades, he sold it to the current owner here in Southern California in January of 2014. Upon purchasing this car, he had Jeff Tighe of Tighe Productions (one of the top vintage BMW restoration shops in Orange County) go through the car and make sure it was in good running order. Some of the services performed include:
General inspection
New factory tool tray
Sort out various electrical/light issues
Repair original Blaupunkt radio
Coolant flush/repair expansion tank
Replace trans and gear oil (synthetic)
Flush power steering fluid (Dextron 3ATF)
Install new fuel filter (KL9)
Adjust valves, replace spark plugs, installed upgraded valve cover gasket
Check charging system
Current owner is an avid German automobile collector here in Central New Jersey who we have been assisting in downsizing his large automobile collection during the past year.
This vehicle is one of the final automobiles from his collection that he is willing to sell.
