The AMC Eagle is a 4 wheel drive, Unibody Car. They use a single speed transfer case for the 4 wheel drive, and independent front suspension. Things that Jeep only began using after 200,000 AMC Eagles were built and sold. The Eagle also made automotive history as the best selling vehicle with the least amount of market research since the FORD MODEL T.
This 1984 AMC Eagle came to my hometown of Ephrata PA as a used car through Wisslers American in the late 80s or early 90s, and still adorns the dealers bumper sticker! (look up the history of AMC dealers in Ephrata, there were two dealers in Ephrata and the small town was able to support both of them for 30+ years...... only blocks apart. Mr Wissler sold this AMC to an older couple who kept it until this past fall when they sold it to me. When I got it, it was in very good condition, but needed some things for inspection, as well as the damage to the passenger side as the lady who was driving it pulled out in front of someone at a 4 way (an at fault, low speed impact). I will detail the car in words to the best of my ability, but I have video of it on youtube as well.
This Eagle came from the factory with: 4.2L 6cyl, automatic transmission, selectable 4 wheel drive. Air conditioning, intermittent wipers, Marchal Fog lights, Tilt steering column, power steering, power brakes (front disc brakes, Rear drum brakes). Camel color interior with seats that are cloth and vinyl. AM/FM Radio, and Quartz clock.
Transmission is a 3 speed auto, NON lockup torque converter. Axle gear ratio is 2.35, fuel mileage is around 20 highway.
4 wheel drive works ok, shifts in and out ok, maybe a little slower than when new.
Emissions systems are all there, and working. Currently has an exempt sticker for emissions because it was operated less than 5,000 miles in my locality since last inspection. (check your local rules about emissions)
The exhaust is in OK shape, I think it is still the original catalytic converter, the muffler looks new. The tailpipe after the muffler was rusted through when I got it, so I welded up some pipe to repair it, there is also a small patch welded on the main pipe near the cat. Has No leaks!
Brakes are in very good condition, should not need any maintenance for a long time.
Tires are very good, no dry rot, no slow leaks. The tires are mismatched brands, but they are all the same number size 215/65/R15. The front two are the same brand, but the rear two are different brands, all have about the same tread depth 5 or 6 / 32nds.
The interior is very nice for a car this old and original. Some small imperfections to note: a small tear in the driver seat on the lower part of the back. The headliner material looks like it was redone, has two small pencil size spots in it now. The speaker grill on the passenger door is broken. The driver side of the rear cargo area has some sun fading. The rear cargo cover is in VERY good condition. Original spare tire is in excellent shape.
Mechanically everything works at this car except the Air Conditioning and rear defroster. The previous owner said that they had the AC charged but the condenser leaked, and thats as far as they went. Might just need a condenser and a recharge, It is a good style system, using R12. All the gauges work, and are accurate. Doors open and close good (even the dented ones). The rear hatch opens but does not lift itself, can be lifted easily with one finger and stays up even in the cold. The vent fan works great and does not make any noises. The vent controls work good. Hood release is in good shape. All the lights and turn signals work fine. The intermittent wipers work good. The windows on the doors that are dented do not roll down as far as they should, but they still work.
The transmission shifts good, and does not slip or chatter or anything.Motor Runs good, pings just a little under hard acceleration, Needs either the timing turned back, or run 93 octane fuel to get away from pinging. (that is up to the buyer to decide). I did clean the Idle tubes in the carburetor, and also I replaced the valve cover gasket, and PCV valve and grommets.
It passed inspection in January with flying colors, needs nothing to go down the road. All fluid levels are ok, but it is coming upon the time around 100K miles when things should be maintained.
I did not get a quote for fixing the damage to the passenger side, but I did get a rocker panel cover and a set of doors in a lighter copper color. That all goes with the car. The replacement doors do not have interior panels on them, as you would use the ones from the car. The paint on the replacement doors is presentable, but far from perfect, with some touch up spots that are easily noticeable..So it is up to the buyer to figure out what route to take with that. It would not be terribly expensive to have a body shop take the old doors off, straighten the A pillar a bit and bolt the new doors on as is. Or do it all yourself if you are into that. Straightening the dented doors is going to be more expensive than repainting the new doors, but again that is the buyers deal. There are a few ways to go with that repair.
The rest of the car body is very clean and straight, some small nicks and a scratch have been touched up with the correct paint and so are barely noticeable. There is one spot of rust that is not detrimental to the vehicle, in the driver side rear wheel well where the rocker panel meets the floor boards. It is not an open hole.. yet. Rust is like cancer the sooner you get it taken care of the easier, cheaper, and better off you will be. That spot will not take much to get rid of right now.
The stock ratings on a 4.2L six cyl. are 110 Horsepower and 210 LB torque, and the car weighs about 3500 lbs. This means that you will not be winning any races any time soon. It moves along just fine, but will be a bit slower than the average car today.
I would not be afraid to sell this to a friend or neighbor, its a decent classic car that works good.
*Please note that the Jeep wheels and tires do not go with the car, they are only for cool pictures.
