Amazingly original '49 Willy's CJ3A. I purchased this from the estate of the original owner, after he passed several years ago. We pulled it out of a storage building on the farm (along with a matching CJ2A that my brother has) by Dodge City, KS. He had a cabin in New Mexico, and had one CJ for himself, and one for his wife, that they would take to the cabin each year. I found the New Mexico tag in the back of the jeep, and decided it needed to go on the front bumper.
Probably the most incredible thing about this CJ is the fact it has no rust, none, anywhere, top to bottom. there is slight surface rust in a couple areas, but absolutely no rot or rust through. almost unheard of in a non restored jeep. It came from a very dry area, and stored inside when not in use. I am guessing it had sat for 20 years or so before we pulled it out of that building. I cleaned it up (2 inches of dust!) changed the fluids, put in a new fuel tank, points, plugs, etc, and she sprang to life! While we were at it, we went ahead and installed new wheel cylinders, wheel seals, and tires. I'm probably forgetting something, but you get the idea.
Flash forward about five years, and it has now been sitting in one of my buildings the entire time, not getting used. I am selling the building, so the jeep needs to go. It is probably going to need a day or 2 of tinkering, just from sitting while in my possession. I have been driving it a little, it runs like a sewing machine, shifts, and stops fine, but the transfer case seal went to leaking. We put a new one in, and it was a very easy fix and does not leak now, I just want you to be aware that I'm sure there will be little things like that here and there. The lights and heater work as they should - even the horn works!
Condition - As I said it has zero rust. It has been repainted, probably 30 years ago, but shows nice. He did paint over all the little dings & scratches, but at least you can see there is nothing hidden. No filler, etc. He did put a roll bar in this one, as it's the one the children rode in. It also has an altimeter in it, I'm guessing he had carb adjustments for various altitude? He was also a pilot so maybe this was just for fun.
The jeep does have a couple of obvious rare features - first is the steel hard top half cab, and, if you look at the shifters, there is one extra. This Jeep has a factory PTO. It's definitely one of a kind, and a very original survivor.
I really hope this goes to a good home as it is a great piece of history. You find a lot of these modified with lifts, V6 or V8 engines, and all rusted out, but not many like this. we installed a new seal in the transfer case, which fixed the small leak. not an entire transfer case. 10 dollar fix! sorry for the mix up
