Description:
1984 Volvo 240 GLT
The time has come for me to sell my beloved 242 as I'm moving soon anddon't have a way to keep it. There is a lotto say about this car, so first, the tl;dr;- 1984 242 GLT- 266k miles but very clean- Extensive restomod over the last 12 years- Megasquirt-powered and rebuilt '93 B230FT + Ford Racing T5 transmission- 231HP/303 ft. lbs. @ 17psi as of last dyno tuning (prior to IPD Turbo cam)
I purchased this in 2006 and have done an extensive amount of work on it since I've owned it. The goal of the project has always been to build a clean looking, more modern 242 that made fun, reliable street power.
First, I'll list out the major work I've done since owning, then I'll talk more about condition and any issues. I've put about 35k miles on the car since owning, so, unless otherwise noted, assume everything listed here is no more than that old.

There are surely many maintenance items I'm leaving off and I have a giant folder full of receipts for all that. But here's more about the shape of everything.
Body - Great shape overall. The body is very straight and the paint shows great. The glass is clean and the plastics are as good as you can hope for (minimal warpage). Wheels still look brand new. The only major scuff is where I rubbed the front right fender against a pole and some paint chipped off (see pic). One small bubble in the paint under the license plate (see pic). There is a bigger rust issue under the passenger seat that has gone through, and a previous owner did a poor repair to cover the hole (see pic). I've never gotten around to repairing this, but it doesn't seem to have spread much.
Motor - Very strong and good-running motor. No funny noises, no significant leaks (little seepage, not enough to reach the ground). A Megasquirt pro (ex. dyno shop tuner) could probably get it tuned up even better, but it always starts up, idles very smoothly, and revs out strong. Electrical system is great with no battery draining issues, cooling system is great and hasn't gotten hot once. No problems from the fuel or spark systems. A/C blows colder than any factory 240 system when it works (big aftermarket condenser), but there seems to be a leak that has developed somewhere that I haven't pin-pointed and addressed. It is also wired for the A/C pusher fan but then fan lost a blade and is currently removed.
Drivetrain - The Ford Racing T5 in this car is beefy and ready for more power. It's still very tight and new. I think the most loose ends on the car are in this area though. For one, the 2.95:1 first gear would be better paired with 4.10 rear end gears than the current 3.73. The motor makes plenty of low-end torque to get it going, but 4.10's would make starting a bit easier and 5th gear usable below 60. The Spec clutch is shudder-free and surprisingly, not that heavy The other issue I never resolved is that under sudden full power, the driveshaft will sometimes knock on the tunnel. Lastly, I never got around to getting a good shifter boot worked out, so it's just kind of laying over it, but not mounted at the base.
Suspension - Rear bushings (besides torque rods and panhard bar) probably need to be gone through. Some creaking has developed back there on bumps. Shocks are also getting tired. Otherwise good.
Interior - Shows great overall. Carpets and seats are clean. Door panels have never been the best fit and finish, but way better than the crumbling factory panels I had. Rear seat side panels were painted black from tan and have started chipping off, exposing tan. Headliner is good. Sunroof panel is off and needs to be reupholstered, but I have it. Sunroof itself works smoothly. Power windows work. Power locks are not working. Flashers not working but blinkers are fine. Rear defroster has never worked. Stereo sounds great. All gauges work.
