1989 Volvo 240 DL

I'd like to introduce you to the rust-free 98,000 mile 1989 VOLVO 240 DL my family lovingly refer to as McLoughlin.Like all of our Volvo restorations, McLoughlin is named after his original owner, Luke "John" McLoughlin, who purchased this gorgeous vehicle new in 1989, and drove it until his passing in 2008.Luke's family kept the car around until late 2017, until they realized it needed more attention than they could afford to give it.This car was always dealer-serviced, and we have a mountain of receipts to prove it!But, of course, a VOLVO dealer will always come at a premium, so when their dealer told them the car needed a small fortune invested in it to repair the suspension and brakes, their best choice was to sell the car, which is where we come in.

I'm often told I have a VOLVO problem, but my wife calls it VOLVO passion, so it must be an OK thing.Cue Sarah McLachlan... when I see a VOLVO in need, I can't stand to see it in distress, and I just have to help.My VOLVO restorations are a thing of legend on social media, and here's your chance to own one!
You're looking for THAT 240, right?Maybe not a trailer queen, but the one you wouldn't have to think twice about driving 2,000 miles home, or wouldn't hesitate to take on a spontaneous cross-country trip?Well look no further, this is it.On the surface it's pretty obvious, silver on black is a great color combo. The car has a flawless interior... even the original floormats are like new.The outside is bright and shiny. But how is it mechanically? What was done to it?What kind of money will you have to sink into it once you get it home?I keep a pretty close eye on eBay, getting notifications every time a 240 is listed. You have your usual suspects... 120k-180k miles, needs ~$3k put into it to make it perfect, the description is vague, and you really can't be QUITE sure what you're going to get.Occasionally a 240 pops up that some old VOLVO mechanic is selling, and that's all fine and well because you know it's legit mechanically, but the aesthetics aren't in-line.So now that I've set the stage, let me tell you a little more about what sets McLoughlin apart from the crowd.
Since March 2018, McLoughlin has undergone an exhaustive top to bottom restoration.Mechanical work was performed by a 40-year veteran VOLVO mechanic, and aesthetic restoration performed with the help of my friend Alex, owner of Swedish Car Parts, Inc., a VOLVO restoration parts manufacturer. So what's it like to drive?Well I just drove this car 200 miles in the last two days, in every type of condition from bumper-to-bumper agonizing Chicago traffic, to a 90MPH back road jaunt to Rockford, IL... PS, it's been an oppressive 100+ degrees outside, so it goes without saying, yes, the A/C works!Smooth, quiet idle, to the degree that I wish it had a tachometer because sometimes I forget the engine is running.Seriously, and that's not always the case with other B230 engines in 240s I've restored. The transmission is smooth, no drivetrain vibration, and there's no road noise. The seats... they're rebuilt, with new springs, new webbing, and brand new heating pads, so we're talking about seats that are as comfortable as 240 seats get, that will even keep your buns and back warm and toasty on the coldest of days. You look around when you're driving McLoughlin, and you feel good, nothing worn or broken, no weird sounds, no error lights, nothing leaking... you're driving one of the best examples of a 240 on America's roads today.Hell, I got a thumbs-up from three people when I was out driving this car yesterday alone!I'll put it this way, I FEEL GOOD about selling this car to someone, and I wouldn't hesitate to drive McLoughlin to California right this very moment were I so provoked! And why wouldn't I be... I just sunk thousands of dollars into it!About that... let's get into what has been done to this car.

SERVICE PERFORMED THIS YEAR:

Four new tires, new brake calipers, new brake rotors, new brake pads, new bearings, new seals, rear axle gear oil changed, new transmission fluid/filter/gasket, AW shift solenoid bypass installed, new driveline bearing, new u-joints, new shocks, new struts, ALL new bushings front & rear, new control arms, new track arms, new stabilizer end links, new tie rods, new ball joints, new timing belt/tensioner/seals, new belts, new water pump/thermostat, new fuel filter & seals, new flame trap and lines, new breather box & hoses, new oil cap seal & dipstick tube o-ring, new preheater hose, new exhaust, new battery tray, new distributor cap/rotor, new spark plugs, new air filter, new mass airflow sensor, new gas/oxygen sensor, new power antenna, new Bluetooth-enabled radio, new VOLVO battery
Gasp... OK, let me take a breath.

It merits noting, anything that wasn't replaced, like let's say the starter, alternator, AC compressor, idle air control valve, motor mounts, trans mount, heater core, radiator, radiator hoses, master cylinder, or blower motor and blower motor resistor didn't get replaced because there are newer ones on the car already, all recorded services performed in the last three years.
McLoughlin has a great pedigree, there's no doubt, all the trouble spots are addressed with a mountain of receipts to prove it, and everything down to the notoriously troublesome central door locks and the little finicky mercury-filled light under the hood works! What kept it looking the way it does is a combination of a family who cared for it deeply, and an excessive application of The Protector rustproofing everywhere you look.I think that's the ONE caveat... when the dealer had this rustproofed, they got it EVERYWHERE.It's a good thing and a bad thing, honestly... but, it's what kept this car looking like this for so long.So granted, under the hood it could be prettier without all the greasy black rustproofing everywhere, but some would argue it shouldn't be removed.I didn't remove it, but a guy could always get jiggy with a pressure washer and take it all off—once it's yours, do what you want!

Well, why are you still reading this?Go bid on the car!More questions?ALWAYS feel free to ask!

Want to take McLoughlin for a test drive or bring him to a mechanic?Absolutely—let's arrange it!

Want to make me an offer?Sure... let's chat.

If I missed something, I'll be sure to update this description!

Please note, I'll be driving this car around town, so I may put 20 or so additional miles on the car in the next week. Moreover, the car is listed for sale locally as well. In the event I sell this car before the auction ends, I will cancel all bids and close the auction.
