1979 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon

This 1979 Volkswagen Type 2 panel van is a German-market example that was manufactured on March 5th, 1979 at the Hanover, Germany production. A full restoration was performed by it's current (and second only) owner including metal work, body preperation, repaint, engine overhaul, reupholstered seats, a refresh of the brakes, and replacement of the clutch and transmission seals. Finished in blue over gray vinyl upholstery, the van is powered by a 1.6-liter flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes white-painted bumpers and steel wheels, along with front disc brakes, a heater, and a fire extinguisher. This Volkswagen Type 2 is offered with a Volkswagen Certificate, and a clean Maryland title in the seller’s name.
Finished from the factory in Neptune Blue (L50K), the van was stripped and repainted, following rust repairs and replacement of the center floor panels and a section of the right quarter panel. The windshield, window seals, and door gaskets have been replaced at that time, while the front bumper was repaired and repainted in November 2022. Features include a passenger side sliding door and dual side mirrors.
White-painted 14″ steel wheels wear chrome VW-branded hubcaps and are wrapped in 185R14C Sava Trenta 2 tires. The parking brake cables, left wheel cylinder, and rear brake shoes and drums were replaced in July 2022. Additional work includes replacing the shocks along with the brake lines, pads, and rotors.
The cabin features a pair of bucket seats that have been reupholstered in gray vinyl with white piping. Rubber liners cover the floors, and additional equipment includes a heater, three-point seat belts, a fire extinguisher, and a plaid-upholstered spare tire cover. The front floorboard seals were replaced in November 2022, and the seller states that the heater tubes and temperature control cables were replaced and an aftermarket horn button added during current ownership.
The two-spoke steering wheel frames a 150-km/h speedometer and a fuel level gauge. The five-digit odometer has rolled over at least once and shows 3,000 kilometers.
The 1.6-liter flat-four is a Mexican-built engine that was rebuilt around 2021 and is fed via a single carburetor. The throttle cable and valves were adjusted and the spark plugs were replaced in November 2022. The engine rebuild included refurbishing the crankshaft and replacing the connecting rods, bearings, and piston rings. Additional work performed included installing a replacement fuel pump, battery, and exhaust system.
Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transaxle that was reportedly fitted with a replacement clutch and seals during current ownership. The shifter bushings were replaced in 2022.
The Volkswagen Certificate shows a manufacture date of March 5th, 1979, along with the colors and specifications for the engine and transaxle.
