Description:
1970 Volkswagen Custom Dune Buggy Autodynamics Deserter Series 1
This unique, one of a kind, custom Dune Buggy has just completed a two year customization and build. It started as an Autodynamics Series One but now has a completely new modern look. Although similar to a Manx a Deserter is 4" longer allowing for a lower seating position. History of these Dune Buggies can be found at the Deserter Owners Group website. In fact, this car was featured as the Deserter Owners Group May 2020 calendar car before it was even completed. To start the customization the body's original gel coat was completely stripped off, the entire front and rear were restyled with modern lights fully molded into the body and the fenders were widened. Custom side pods were lengthened, widened, and re-arched at the wheel wells for a better fit. The body then received at least one new coat of fiber glass and the modifications got at least three. The newly redesigned body was then re-gel coated. It was blocked true, polyester spray filled, blocked again, and urethane primed prior to paint. A green pearl base was applied then multiple coats of Lil' Daddy Roth Monster Flake that was followed by three coats of high solids clear. The clear was wet sanded out, lime green candy applied, and re cleared. This was wet sanded out, ghost chameleon psychedelic rally stripes applied and was re cleared for a third time. The paint was then wet sanded, buffed, and polished for extreme depth and gloss. Glasurit high quality products were used throughout. Both the headlights and taillights have been buried under West System epoxy and cleared over during painting to achieve complete smoothness. Although they are part of the body the headlights can be aimed and all bulbs can be serviced from the wheel wells. The center taillight is airbrushed with a functional third brake light to resemble a single light across the rear of the car. The windshield has been chopped 5 inches and is mounted by custom brackets giving it a rake and mounts for the color matched Hollywood Smoothie mirrors. The chassis is a later IRS pan with new shortened floor pans and frame head. A new adjustable front beam was installed including all new parts and disc brakes. All brake parts are new including stainless lines and flex hoses. New axle assemblies, KYB Gas-A-Just shocks, Weld Wheels, BFG Radial TA's, and front and rear sway bars were added. A custom cage, similar to a Manxter, was fabricated and color matched to the pan in bright silver with flat clear. The engine was built out to 1776cc with 90.5 Mahle pistons and a new Scat 69mm counter weighted crankshaft. CB Performance "I" beam rods, Engle 110 cam and phosphate coated lifters, and full flow oil pump with filter were installed. New 041 heads with stainless valves and hi-rev springs with CB Performance swivel foot rockers are installed with chromoly case studs. A 12.5lb lightened flywheel, Kushlock disc, and 1700lb pressure plate were also installed. Topped off with a pair of premium 40mm IDF style carburetors. Pertronix Flamethrower III ignition and Taylor 8mm custom wires deliver the spark. The exhaust is a custom fabricated system that has been ceramic coated and features a Magnaflow polished stainless "X" flow muffler and stainless tips. Color matched tins, finned aluminum valve covers, and chrome 75amp alternator complete the engine. The custom white metalflake vinyl interior took styling ques from Ed Roth's "Beatnik Bandit". New Scat bomber seats were recovered and matching interior panels were made. White seat belts, metalflake steering wheel, GM tilt steering column, chrome trigger shifter with Rat Fink metalflake knob, TJ Customs full carpet, and matching mats compliment the interior. Custom Speed Hut gauges include a GPS speedometer, tachometer, oil pressure, and fuel level. Led indicators for engine warnings, turn signals, and high beams. A new Speedway 22 circuit wiring harness gets it all wired correctly. This car looks and drives awesome. I have almost 40 years of quality auto collision repair, restoration, and customization experience. It is difficult to show in these few pictures just how cool and unique this car is. I have a thick folder of receipts, hundreds of photos documenting the build, and a clean and clear title in my name. Miles listed are from completion, title reflects original donor miles. I'm happy to answer questions.Vehicle Details:
