1964 Volkswagen Bus 21 Split Window
1964 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon 21 Split Window
Since inception, Volkswagen has produced affordable cars for the masses. Initially creating utilitarian vehicles with an emphasis on transportation, VW created a number of iconic and undeniably classic automobiles that developed a cult following that has persevered generation after generation. Though Volkswagen has produced a variety of classic icons, the most sought after and timeless examples are the Beetle and the Bus. When the bus was first introduced for the 1950 model year, it was an entirely new idea! The... amount of space and number of configurations available for something that came in such a small package was almost unheard of. Perhaps the most popular first-generation Type 2 Bus iteration is the split window, 21-window Bus like this one. It is no wonder why! With front bucket seats and two additional rows of seating, this was a vehicle with many uses. Items such as the nearly full length ragtop and the large number of functional windows made this both an infinitely useful and fun vehicle. The split windshields fold out to increase airflow, while all of the side windows either slide or pop out. The ragtop slides back revealing a panoramic view at the sky. If you're reading this and you are a VW enthusiast, you may remember seeing this Bus in magazines in the early 2000s. This is a former show vehicle, built around 2004 by Kustom Coach Werks. It is in beautiful condition, as a show car should be, and has a unique and recognizable look. The yellow and silver two-tone is a flattering and attractive combination well suited to a subtle custom vehicle like this. The body is clean and straight, with blindly bright chrome. Though it has been customized, this Bus has been kept largely true to original form with the custom paint, chrome wheels, and suspension lowering being the only large cosmetic changes. The interior is also fully customized, with leather two-tone seating throughout and a custom overhead console for front seat passengers. The dashboard is painted to match the exterior silver, with custom VDO gauges matching the silver with yellow lettering. All of the seating is leather, which is intact and showing minimal signs of wear. There's lots of room for people in this microbus! The side entry doors are operational, as is the sliding ragtop, ratcheting front side windows, and every single pop-out window including the windshield and rear hatch glass. The windows have been tinted; almost a necessity to keep interior temperatures reasonable! A Gene Berg t-handle shifter is your direct link to the transmission. Custom interior panels are the finishing touches that really pull this unique interior together! Under the hood is a beautifully detailed, modified Type 1 VW engine. Many may remember that the tradeoff for an affordable Volkswagen was a distinct lack of power. This Bus is far from underpowered! The engine is a 2,110 CC engine with all new/rebuilt parts including the block, head, camshaft, and other internal components. It has dual carburetors with a Porsche 911 cooling setup and a custom performance exhaust system. This Bus is very powerful for an old VW, producing over 100 horsepower! Not only can it easily keep up with modern traffic, but it is an absolute blast to drive! The Freeway Flyer transmission shifts smoothly, and the large shifter handle makes gear selection a breeze. While there are many benefits to the Freeway Flyer transmission, the most notable is taller gear ratios for high speed capabilities. This Bus may have been a show car, but it was built to be driven! If you're looking for a running, driving, show and event ready 21 split window Type 2 Bus, this is for you! It comes with assorted trophies, as well as a Johnny Lightning diecast of this actual Bus including a photo card. This is a turn-key classic, ready for a new owner to show it off in all its glory!
