1970 Transporter Camper Conversion

If you are looking for a bus that only needs cosmetic work to be completely restored, this bus is for you. A Californian since 2003, this bus is mechanically tight with upgrades and enhancements for extended, self reliant traveling. I bought it in 2003. After replacing almost all of the mechanical systems and a new engine (1641- forged pistons), we took this on the road for a 9,000 mile road trip through the US and Mexico and had zero mechanical issues. An everyday driver until 2009, it has been housed in my garage and used for weekend excursions since then. I am parting with it because I need the room to the Westy I recently purchased.

Highlights

·The engine was replaced prior to road trip and still has perfect compression.

·Full flow oil filter system. If you do not know what this is, it adds a real oil filter and extra oil capacity to the engine. Keeps your oil clean and your engine cool.

·Two battery system with toggle switch and inverter for 110v applications.

·Vintage steel rack**. The rack is worth some $$ on its own. They are not easy to find! This rack will carry whatever you want to pack on top. Load it up with gas cans, surf boards, kayaks, a disco platform, whatever you want; this is the real steel deal and not some aluminum knock off that will break when fully loaded.

·The tool box is secured under the back seat and locks so it and its contents can not be stolen.

·The tool box is also loaded with new spare parts (new 009 distributor, coil, gaskets, clutch cable, fuel lines, belts etc.) that come with the purchase (we made sure we were ready for anything). I also have an oil sump that adds capacity you can install. We took it off to increase clearance. Tools are not included.

·The spare tire well has been converted to a lock box** for storing valuables (this is so stealth that neither the Mexican army nor US Customs even noticed it when searching the bus!).

·Nearly new 8PR tires. Purchased last summer before we bought the Westy. Less than 500 miles on the tires. Receipt available.

·See below for list of other mechanical replacements and upgrades. Oil has been changed fanatically every 2,500 miles or less.

*If the rack and lock box do not interest you, they can be removed.

This bus drives and runs like a dream. I have done the mechanical "heavy lifting" for you so you can just drive and enjoy it; or you can spend a bit more of your own money and make it "pretty”. If you plan to use it like we did, I suggest keeping it rugged as nobody pays any attention to the old bus driving down the road (except the Mexican army and US Customs). The only reason I am selling it is we have increased our numbers and needed to go to a Westy. I do not have garage room for both.

The body work. There is rust around the back window; it needs a new back gate. $125 gets you a rust free used replacement according to my local VW restoration shop. There is body work in the front that needs amending. I do not know who did the previous job, it was before my time. Small surface rust spots by the wheel wells, some under the battery, otherwise pretty clean. Undercarriage is in great shape- see pics.

The reserve is set fairly high as a lot of money has gone to restore this mechanically. You can buy a cheaper bus and spend another $10k (it adds up fast) to get it to this mechanical standard; or you can buy this one, save a bunch of cash & time and be done. I have all the receipts to prove the mechanical work. Please do not bid unless you plan to buy. If you have questions, email me, I can email other pics as well. If you happen to be in Northern California you can come see it and drive it. A $500 non-refundable deposit due at auction close payable by Zelle. Balance due within 7 business days via Wells Fargo wire transfer. I can drop off locally (Sacramento) for shipping if needed. Note, the pics with the tent and loaded rack are not current; they are from past travels.
