1985 Volkswagen VW Bus Vanagon GL, Rare Automatic, 117K Miles, Great Classic Van
1985 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon GL
If you have been looking for a well-preserved Volkswagen Vanagon, then this is it. This beautiful 1985 VW Vanagon GL has a smooth shifting automatic transmission with a recently installed 1.9 liter 4 cylinder engine and 117K miles on the body. The van has been well maintained by the previous owners with more than $11,000 in repairs since 2014 (NOT including replaced engine)! The Vanagon's interior is in awesome condition with no major rips or tears in the fabric, and no evidence of pets or smoke. The dash is also in excellent condition with no cracks. The exterior is equally nice thanks to a new paint job in March 2015. The van was recently driven from St. Louis to Atlanta with no issues whatsoever. The new tires and front end work meant the van drove down the road pretty straight. The view from the front is authentically German, with a peace sign emblem on the grill and a "Deutschland" license plate. You'll enjoy a nice sounding CD /Ipod player with remote and bluetooth capability. Take a look at the repairs (and the $$ spent) on this Vanagon since 2014:
6/2014 - Front brake overhaul, new steering rack with inner tie rods, power steering hoses, new stainless steel heater tubes under van, new fan switch, new Ranger 6 ply tires $3847
9/2014 - Replaced alternator, water pump V-belt, purge cooling system $367
9/2014 - Replaced exhaust from the cat converter to rear with stainless steel exhaust system from Go Westy $1,307
11/2014 - Transmission service (filter & fluid) and alignment $573
3/2015 - Repaint entire vehicle $3575
3/2015 - New spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap & rotor, new antenna $574
6/2015 - Headlight upgrade kit $70
7/2015 - New tinted windows all around $400
10/2016 - New left & right wheel bearings, ball joints, and alignment $1098
1/2017 - Replaced engine (with another engine from a project Vanagon), new water pump and hoses
The Vanagon also has the original A/C system, although there is a slow leak in one of the hoses where it connects to the compressor, so the A/C does not cool sufficiently. Compressor works fine and does engage. Other areas of interest include a slight dent in rear metal bumper and a repainted area of old rust under driver door (see pic). Underneath the van is in good shape with no significant rust to worry about.
Some recent additions include wind deflectors, an authentic German license plate, new front floor mats, nifty tropical window shades, and a VW keychain.
My hope is that this Vanagon will be passed on to someone who appreciates them, has actually driven a Vanagon before (who knows you don't drive them down the freeway at 75mph), and who understands the importance of preserving its originality for future generations (not stripping out the interior or using it to haul construction materials). If this is you, I welcome you to bid or ask further questions.
Why am I selling? I've owned 3 other Vanagons in my lifetime. My first one was my college vehicle. This is when I fell in love with them. I bought this to keep for a while, however, circumstances have changed and really have no place to park it.
If you are coming from out of town, I am more than 1 hour from the nearest airport. I may be willing to pick up at the Doraville Marta station (that's Atlanta's subway), which you can take from the airport in the Baggage Claim area. I will not be able to pick up directly at the airport. I MAY be willing to deliver the van to a neighboring State (Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, North/South Carolina) depending upon the bid amount. Thanks.
