Item location: Davis, California, United States
Description:
1982 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Westfalia
This has been such a nice vehicle for camping these past nine years. Two burners for cooking, a draining tray, a sink, and a fridge. It also has lots of convenient storage, two tables to eat at, an upstairs double bed and the back seat pulls out to make a second double bed. This is an original northern California Westfalia Camper van with 190,000 miles on the clock. A reconditioned engine was installed approximately 20,000 miles ago, just before I purchased it. The salvage title is because it was donated to the Salvation Army and purchased at auction by the previous owner, who sold it soon after because he was unexpectedly leaving the country. I have that paperwork. I believe that I am the third owner. It has a California smog certificate from April 4th, 2016, and is registered until April 14th, 2017, so it is ready to drive anywhere, any time. It is currently insured.
It has manual transmission, and an air cooled fuel injected 2.0 motor. This van is rust free, has all original paint, except for where I had a dent on the driver's door repaired (turned into a pole at the DMV when I originally registered it!), and runs and drives really well on the flat and slowly uphill as is typical of these camper vans. In order to keep the engine safe from overheating (make sure to keep it below 400 F) it has a Cylinder Head Temperature Gauge so that you can adjust your driving habits.
THERE IS NO RESERVE and I have the title.
4 speed manual transmission
Clean interior
Good tires including spare. It has a newer radio and CD player.New gas cap and keys.New sliding door handle and keys.
New regulator and valve on the propane tank.
Propane stove works well.Refrigerator has helpful gauge to indicate when the propane is lighted - see photo
Water system good, but the replacement pump is a little slow.
Beds and upholstery in good and clean condition. The rear insect screen is in excellent condition, as are the front and side sleeping curtains. Both tables and their stands are present.
My mechanic has suggested that the valves may benefit from reseating. The engine is a little rough until it warms up.It is a good idea to keep an eye on the oil level when traveling long distances.Refrigerator getting hard to start and sometimes turns off during a journey when in propane mode - spider webs in the ignition chamber could be the problem. I have literature to peruse on this topic.
The front windshield has a minor chip and some wear. The sliding door has a long, ancient dent along the bottom of the door - not really obvious and certainly not a problem - see photo.
The pop top fabric is original, usable, but probably should be replaced some time - a new PopTop Tent Canvas from The Bus Depot is $400. A new zipper has been hand sewn into the front vent. The side curtains are somewhat faded. The rear curtains are replacements.
Interior white vinyl wallpaper could use replacement.Interior roof cloth above driver has stains and in hot weather sags a little in places- see photo.Front driver seat has worn through the fabric on the upper lefthand side - see photo.Interior carpet is clean but has a minor bare patch - see photo. There is a thin crack in the outer surface of the drawer - see photo.
Both bumpers are loosing some chrome and showing some rust - see photo. The rear bumper has some ancient damage on the left - see photo.
Paint faded on the rear door (was parked with back to the sun at some stage) - see photo. The clock does not work, but probably is easy enough to fix.The original plastic holder on the driver's door is missing - see photo.
You can fly in and drive it home. I can pick you up at Sacramento (SMF) airport. Vehicle pickup date must be arranged with me ahead of time.
