This rare, long-door example was completely nut & bolt restored from 2007 to 2011 with over 3500 man hours and was finished in a striking color combination, well presented with white coachwork, complemented by red trim. This TR is also only one of 952 left hand drive TR2’s sold new in the USA market (#TS1380L) and the 1,380th example of only 8,636 Triumphs made between 1953 and 1954! The first production road Triumph TR2 left the Triumph works at Canley in August 1953; thereafter production was very slow for several months. Just 250 cars were built prior to 1954 of which only 50 stayed within the UK. At the start of 1954, production increased and TR2s began to dominate the home market. This was due to Triumph's determination that a reasonable proportion would stay in the UK, whereas MG, Morgan and Jaguar were mainly exporting. The early TR2s were sought-after mainly because of their performance, low running costs, availability and low price. Such was the success of the TR2 that in 1954 one entered the famous Mille Miglia event where it came 28th out of 450 starters and in the Le Mans 24 Hours of that year another TR2 came 5th in class. Both results emphasized the strength and performance of the cars. Produced at the Coventry, England Triumph factory on Monday, April 26, 1954 then being dispatched to North America and sold to client at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The original Standard Register Certificate from 1954 is included (Standard Motor Company). This TR2 was then discovered in 1976, by one of the founders of the Georgia Triumph Association, Michael Elder, who was commissioned by his then-employer to collect this TR2 from Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base in Jacksonville, North Carolina for a buyer in Georgia. Upon returning with the car to Atlanta, Georgia, the buyer decided the Triumph was not for him so Elder personally bought it. Beginning in 1977, he took the car apart and began the restoration process. However, it never progressed beyond the stage shown in some of the accompanying photographs. Elder listed the car in his association’s newsletter in September 2005, emphasizing that it was project for an experienced individual, not for amateurs as the car was a rare early TR2 and that only a experienced Triumph enthusiast should finish the restoration. The next owner, a Michael C., bought the car on October 1, 2005 and then sold it to a Triumph expert David H. on December 1, 2007. While under David’s ownership, the car underwent a no expense spared, professional nut & bolt restoration from 2007 to 2011 with over 3,500 man hours. Included with the binder full of restoration receipts, progress photographs and technical notes. Dressed in White, the car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent order, including the full set of weather equipment including gray folding canvas top and gray side screens. The two-seater’s bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy, as with the highly detailed undercarriage and the Lucas battery appears new. The car’s chrome bumpers and hard to find trim pieces are in excellent order. The TR is included with the standard factory windscreen and wipers but also included with pair of genuine Brooklands aero screens that really make this looks like a proper British roadster! We have included photos of the car with each windscreen installed. This TR2 rolls on Kumho radials, size 165/80R15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on the original factory white steel wheels topped with a chrome Triumph Globe center cap. The tires are in great shape while the wheels are in excellent shape. Under the hood is the original numbers matching 1.9L four-cylinder Standard wet liner inline-four engine from the Vanguard, fitted with the original twin 1.5 H4 type SU carburetors. The head is still the original and the engine was completely rebuild in 2009 including the upgraded fully synchronized TR3 4-speed manual transmission (#CT66265) with robust TR3 rear end (#TS56727). The four-speed manual transmission is linked with the desirable and hard to find optional overdrive (#007491) with overdrive on second, third and fourth gears. The front brakes have been upgraded to TR2 10” brakes and the rear 9” TR2 brakes. This “small mouth” TR2 also still retains its original engine hand crank and T lock handle. On August 10, 2017 at 256 miles since restoration, the following service work was performed:• Retorqued cylinder head to 100 ft-lbs; no movement noted• Adjusted valve clearance – intake .010” and exhaust .012”• Installed new generator and control box• Resealed both carburetors, set mixture and topped up dash pot oil• Cleaned fuel pump screen• Flushed brake fluid• Chassis lube• Checked transmission oil and differential oil• Cleaned spark plugs, set gaps and set point gap• Checked coolant Inside, the car’s red interior is over fantastic condition. The bucket seats look excellent and ready for a fun jaunt. The matching carpet is in excellent shape while a three-spoke, black steering wheel offers great contrast to the rest of the interior. The red instrument panel offers full instrumentation; it and the inner door liners are all in excellent order. A floor-mounted shift lever completes the interior and the overdrive switch on the dash! Documentation includes the original instruction book, which cost 5 shillings, copies of the car’s bills of sale through the years, a binder full of articles, forms, diagrams, photos, original Standard Register Certificate from 1954, The Vintage Triumph Register correspondence/certificates and full restoration receipts.Competition to this car in 1954 included AC’s Ace, Austin-Healey’s 100, Jaguar XK and MG’s TF Roadster.
