Laser Straight 1985 Toyota Celica Supra S MK II
1985 Toyota Supra S
I have owned this car for 30 years (2nd owner), and truth be told, I don't want to sell it. But it has become painfully clear that by the time I get to this car, there will be no car to be getting to, as I can no longer store it inside.
This car was my daily driver for at least 15 years back in the daybefore it went into a decade long storage. It is a 1985 Celica Supra 5 speed MKII S model with all the bells and whistles that one could get. You literally could not walk into a Toyota dealer and pay more for a car in 1985. It was the "King of the Hill". This car is "Super Dark Red" with gray leather interior just like the centerfold in the 85 factory brochure. As stated, it has everything available. Sunroof, electric windows, electric locks, cruse control, stereo equalizer, factory Recaro seats with air bolsters etc....
This car is anunmolested originalthat still wears its original paint (which is getting tired with factory primer showing through in places). It still has its original spare tire, and owners manual, It has never been wrecked, and in fact ithardly evenhas a ding (which even I believeis truly amazing for a car of this age. Or any age for that matter).
Now to the bad news. I will not blow smoke, the car will do plenty of that for me. And there is problem #1. Back in the 90's, the car started to smoke. I went to the dealer for a check up. They said (if memory serves me right) that the valve guide seals needed replacement. I asked if it would do any damageto keep usingit (A question I ask Dr.'s now more than mechanics, but I digress). They said "no", so I drove it for years with smoke.Today that would be viewed as environmentally incorrect. But back then it was just called beingcheap! Many years after the smoke started, what I believe to bethe front main seal gave out and started leaking. It was then that I took the car out of service. It was eventuallystored in a friends ware house for many years before he ran out patience.
During it's time in storage I changed it's gas yearly whichnow allows me to tell you that this car is running, rolling, steering, braking, and doing ever thing expected from a car. In fact it is one of the best running sick cars on the planet. But this car can not be used, as once it heats up it pee's its oil out. It will need engine work.
The A/C was updated to a newer refrigerant and was working when it was stored. But as one would expect of a automotive A/C after 10 years of storage, it is no longer working. However all other items including sunroof, windows, locks, lights, etc... all work as they should.
Back in the day, Toyota's carswere known to beinadvertently environmentally correct (even if I wasn't). Toyota's of this era were simplybiodegradable. Thismeans that now most have once again become one with the earth. In fact it was not uncommon to see major rust on Supras(and other Japanese cars) only five years old back in the 80's & 90's. The good news is that this car has mostly escaped the dreaded tin worm and has minimal rust. However minimal does not mean none! There is some small areas of rust (all that I know of I have photographed). Some of these areasdate back 20 years (but strangely never got much worse) such as the rust were the 85-86 only tailgate wing meets the tail gate. Another area is the inner door bottoms. This is a very unique situation as rust is "only" on the inner door. The door skins are pristine. (The photos show both sides of the doors where the rust is an issue so that you can see that there is no rust on the outer door.)
The interior needs some work. Sweat and the Florida sun killed the driver seat years ago. Time and the sun is working on the passenger seat as you read this. The rear seats are near pristine.
Bottom line, this is a VERY solid and straight Supra that will need some attention to get her back to the 80's Samurai Warrior she once was. But you will be hard pressed to find a more solid unmolested starting point if you are looking for one of these classic luxury GT's.
