Some people wanted to play Smokey and the Bandit when buying a Firebird in the late 1970s. But others like this one were a far better breed. Here's the ultimate surviving 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am with exceptionally original features such as the bold red paint, 400 V8 under the hood, four-speed manual transmission, and WS6 package as per the included build sheet.
The second generation Trans Am was a seriously intimidating package. The wide ground effects in front of the wheel wells, integrated rear spoiler, and shaker hood all gives this a real presence on the streets. When the dent-resistant Endura front end is as complete as this one, it's not only a dead giveaway to some serious care, but also it gives the Firebird Trans Am an aggressive beak that perfectly complements the famous hood bird graphic. It only gets better as the whole car looks like it's breathing fire thanks to the blazing paintwork. The code-75 Mayan Red is believed to be mostly original and is in excellent shape. It's the kind of bright red that helps grab attention away from the black Smokey and the Bandit replicas. Not does this one standout, but it holds true survivor status thanks to it being period correct right down to the original dealer decal on the rear and iconic snowflake alloy wheels.
Averaging only around 1,200 miles annually meant this was not a daily driver, and instead got the prime spot in the garage. And you understand this level of care when you take a look at the pristine original white interior. This one really gets its preservation correct, right down to the factory AM/FM stereo that's still cranking out the tunes! But your favorite soundtrack will always come from taking this T/A on the open road. High-back bucket seats and a center console instantly make this a driver's machine. That's exactly what you want when grabbing the stick shift with your right hand, and the iconic three-spoke sports steering wheel with your left one. Plus, every sports car fan loves the machine-turned dash that includes Pontiac's famous tach/clock combo.
With a car that's been so thoroughly original inside and out so far, it shouldn't surprise you that it's the numbers-matching 400 cubic-inch V8 under the hood. It has an exceptionally honest presentation right down to the turquoise block color you can see below the correct snorkel intake. And as you look over all the photos (especially the undercarriage) the cleanliness tells you this was someone's baby. These cars were known for being ferocious. This power inhales through four-barrel carburetor living under that hood scoop, and exhales with authority though the quad-tip dual exhaust. One feature that's seen on a lot of these, but is thankfully missing on this one, is the popular automatic transmission option. That's right...even the Bandit didn't get the kind of powerband control that you have with the Muncie M21 close ratio four-speed manual. But what really makes this survivor Trans Am special is the WS6 handling package. It includes a larger sway bar, tighter steering box ratio, and front disc brakes. This option made the Trans Am the favorite of most automotive magazines back in the day.
Because of how exceptionally original this Pontiac is, you'll be glad to know it comes with a ton of documentation. This includes the original window sticker, factory buildsheet, owner's manual, warranty card, and title documentation. This was the best American sports car you could buy in '78, and someone invested heavily in keeping this way all its life. Here's a rare opportunity to own the greatest of the great T/As
