Description:

1966 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S

As to myself, I am a (70) year old kid that loves muscle cars. For my work, I am retired from managing a Correctional Facility here in Maine and had worked for the Maine Department of Corrections for (40) years. I am also a respected member of my community. I mention this only because of the value of this car and so that prospective buyers will have some idea as to who they are dealing with. Also, please check out my eBay feedback that is at 100% with (1,247) transactions. Many of my transactions have been muscle cars, which I have sold to individuals all over the country as well as Canada, England, France, Switzerland, Germany, Australia and the Netherlands. My reputation for honesty is well known amongst muscle car lovers.

Some Brief History on the 1966 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S.

When the Mustang appeared on April 14st, 1964, all the media attention was on Ford. Released two weeks earlier was the Plymouth Barracuda fastback, to almost no acclaim. This was sad because the Barracuda design was pretty much out there for the time. Based on the Dart underpinnings but with a swoopy, full almost horizontal backlite, the car looked fast just sitting on the showroom floor.

The 1965 Formula S package was issued in the standard Barracuda body with these parts; Commando 273 V8 with new, Carter AFB four barrel carb and intake. Rallye Suspension package of heavy duty torsion bars, leaf springs and sway bar, 14 inch by 51/2 wide wheels and shod with Goodyear Bluestreak tires, tachometer, and sports style wheel covers. The car body was adorned with race stripes going over the roof, trunk lid and hood in the center. The engine got a few dress up goodies like a chrome plated air cleaner with vivid pie pan with engine callout. Finned black crackle finished valve covers and discreet circular Formula S medallions were attached to the front of the fenders. The Commando 233 had 235 horsepower and ran 10.50:1 compression pistons with high lift solid cam. It was a pretty serious package. For transmissions you either chose a Hurst shifted four speed floor job or got an automatic console three speed automatic. Final drive wasn't really drag race material with 3.55 being the lowest offering and most were 3.23 or 2.93 ratios. It was a road race and rally package.

For 1966, Plymouth brought back the Formula S package. The car itself was updated with a boldegg-crate grille front and simpler tail lamps minus the circular back up lenses. The stripes returned along with rally suspension, Commando 4 barrel 273 engine, 14 by 5 1/2 inch wheels and flashy wheel covers with Goodyear Bluestreak tires and a tach. The engine dress up package was included. New options for '66 were a floor console and disc brakes. They sold 2,970 manual transmission Formula S cars and 2,346 automatic powered Formula S cars. That year Plymouth recorded the totals into Formula S model. As you can see, they're quite rare!

Now for your consideration is my 1966 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S 4-speed.

This 273ci 4-speed Formula S is “Wicked Nice”. The previous owner was looking at an older gentleman’s Mini Cooper restorations when the person asked him to look at the car he had stored in the barn. There in the barn was a genuine “66 Formula S. A deal was struck and the car was purchased. 11 years later, it is now in my possession. Mostly original with the Broadcast Sheet and Certi Card, is my 1966 Barracuda Formula S with the desirable high performance 273ci engine, 4-speed transmission and sure grip rear axle.

The paint is new within the last two months and the original type, black stripe per the Broadcast Sheet, was reapplied. Of course some minor body work was also completed but as you can see in the photos, this Formula S is very nice. The interior, undercarriage and engine compartment are all considered to be in good condition and mostly original. All gauges, lights and instruments are in working order including the radio. The Formula S starts, stops, shifts and runs fine. Remember, even though this is a front disc brake car, it is also a non-power steering and non-power assisted disc brake Barracuda Formula S. This car was built for speed, handling and drivability and definitely hits the mark.

There are lots of Formula S Barracudas out there but try to find another 1966 example like this. If they are out there, I haven’t seen them for sale at my asking price.

Exterior: The 1966 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S is a very popular “code PP” Bright Red exterior paint car. The paint is new and very good. The correct black stripe (per the Broadcast Sheet) was applied and clear was sprayed over the entire car. The trim should be considered driver quality. The door handles and the side mirror should also be considered driver quality. Front and rear bumpers are original but need to be re-chromed. Marker lights, tail lights and bezels are all in good condition. All glass is considered to be original (accept the windshield) and in good condition with no cracks. The tires and Rallye rims (not original to the car) are in very good condition with new BFG Radial T/A tires on the front. All exterior lights are working including the headlights, tail lights, plate light, blinkers (the driver’s front fender mount blinker does not work. Has power and ground. I assume it is the #330 bulb.), etc.

Interior: The interior is in good condition and appears to be original with the exception of the carpet. Two typical area cracks (somewhat restored) can be seen in the dash pad. Headliner is OK with a small rip by the rear view mirror. The front and rear seats are good with the exception of the driver’s seat having a small tear (It has been covered. Plus I have added a seat pad.). The door panels are good but not great. Front seat belts are present but not installed. Door locks and windows are in good working order with the rear windows needing some help when using. There is a working/stock pushbutton AM radio (has static with engine running). All gauges are in working order as well as the speedometer, tachometer (new tach sending unit installed but still have the original.), heater/heater fan, wipers (wiper washer works as well.), horn, etc.

Engine: The high point of this Formula S is the 273ci engine with the mechanical solid-lifter valve train that starts easily and runs very good with no funny noises. Almost all engine components appear to be original to the car such as the block, heads, intake, carburetor, exhaust manifolds, air cleaner, radiator, distributor, valve covers and most other components. The Barracuda’s engine compartment has a clean and neat overall appearance.

Trunk: The trunk is in good overall condition with a spare, spare cover, trunk mat and jack assembly.

Undercarriage: What can I say about the undercarriage accept it looks great. The major structural areas such as the frame, frame rails, exhaust, and mechanical components are fine. Front floor boards were replaced at some point and welded in a professional manner. A new fuel tank and correct exhaust was added. Please look at the extensive undercarriage photos and see for yourself. The one thing I could not replace was the passenger’s side, front inner fender, rear section. I simply could not find this part to replace.

ID Photos: The Broadcast Sheet, Certicard, VIN Plate, Body Plate and casting numbers/stampings of the block, intake, carb, distributor, exhaust manifolds, radiator, etc, can be seen here.

WINNING BIDDER DOES NOT HAVE THE OPTION TO LOOK THIS CAR OVER AFTER THE AUCTION CLOSES TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT THEY WANT TO BUY. INSPECTIONS "MUST" BE DONE PRIOR TO THE CLOSE OF THE AUCTION WITH NO EXCEPTIONS.

FYI: I do not have a Maine title for this 1966 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S as Maine does not issue titles for vehicles that are more than (15) years old. I have sold cars all over the country as well as Canada, England, Switzerland, Germany and Australia and have never had a problem. The car will come with a Bill-of-Sale, the Maine Registration signed over to the new owner and a copy of the Maine law regarding titles which is on a form issued by the Maine Motor Vehicle Department.

THANKS FOR READING THIS AD. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY BIDDING.
