1985 Peugeot 505 S

1985 Peugeot 505 S Turbo Diesel Wagon/Estate project

I’m listing this as a project car, but it is a running/driving vehicle that sees regular use. Peugeot XD2S diesel engine, 2.3 liter I believe.193,XXX miles on the odometer, though the actual mileage is unknown. Very good cosmetic condition throughout with zero rust. Repainted in the last ten years and it still shows well, with only a few rock chips here and there. US headlights swapped over to Euro. Stock 14" rims replaced with Peugeot 15" rims from a later model 505. Interior is very nice as well. Some cracks in the dash, but comes with a new Dash Designs cover. Original Peugeot F Microsystems radio works, but is missing one button cover. I have never tried using the cassette player. Originally the car had leather seats all around. One of the previous owners swapped out the front seats to velour, which are exceptionally comfortable. I have had the car for a little over two years. Below is a partial list of work performed:

-replaced tires (Michelin Defenders, only 3,500 miles of use)
-replace battery (Interstate, 2021)
-replace left/rear tie rod
-sand/re-paint battery tray
-rebuilt alternator, replace alternator belt
-source missing tailgate badges, repaint and affix
-replace missing rear window spray nozzle
-replace antenna
-replace l/f side marker lens
-replace r/r door window switch
-replace water pump
-replace thermostat
-replace upper & lower radiator hoses, reservoir overflow hose
-replace brake vacuum pump with a good, used one
-replace heater control valve (with NOS replacement)

-replace left engine mount (right side is good, but I'm including a new replacement)

-rebuild fuel injection pump
-rebuild fuel injectors

-replace glow plugs and glow plug relay

Oil, oil and air filters changed in the last 1,000 miles. The rebuild of the Bosch VE injection pump and injectors cost $1,500. The car has been driven less than 500 miles since then. EVERYTHING on the car works except for the following:

Cluster issues: fuel gauge and tachometer do not work. Speedo works, but is jumpy. Brake light and low oil indicator stuck on (the parking brake does not work, so that may account for the brake light. The low oil light is probably due to a bad sensor, but I’ve read that this system never really worked well, even when new).

A/C does not work. I never got around to troubleshooting this issue. There’s never been a belt on the compressor for as long as I’ve owned the car.I’m including a NOS replacement.

-Parking brake does not work

-Automatic mirror adjust does not work

-Cruise control does not work

-Backup lights do not work

-Rear window sprayer does not work

Again, as it’s being listed as a project car, here are some known issues:

-At present there is a small coolant leak at the base of the radiator. It is a very small amount and requires topping off the reservoir about once a month. I primarily use the car for running errands around town, so it only sees about 10 -20 miles of use per week.

-The current brake vacuum pump has some piston noise, especially after cold starts. The system works fine, but I’d recommend replacing it with a new unit. The original air cleaner was removed, as air filters are no longer available. The car currently has a Saab air cleaner in it. The brake vacuum pump was originally filtered through the air cleaner. Right now it is filtered with a mesh on the hose.

-At some point the ignition switch failed on the car, and probably from difficulty in finding a replacement a previous owner added a remote starter. It is a toggle switch and is located to the left of the steering wheel. To start the car, you turn the key to the second notch, wait for the glow plug light to go out, and hit the toggle switch. This car likes a little throttle applied when you start it, and even the owner's manual says to do that.

-There is a weird issue with the charging system. Once started, you need to rev the engine a little to get the alternator to put out 14 volts. Someone added a volt meter to the dash so one can monitor. When I had the alternator rebuilt I asked the technician about this problem. He said it sounded like an excitation issue, and believes that if the battery light indicator on the instrument cluster were disconnected that would solve it. I've never had the cluster out, and the problem doesn't bother me much, so I've left it alone.

-The car does smoke pretty badly after cold starts. But once you pull out of the driveway barely any smoke is visible. There probably is some engine wear, but I check the oil every 500 miles, and after 3,000 miles of use it only loses a little less than a quart. So the smoke could be related to something else.

-While all of the power windows do work, the front ones are slow and noisy. I'd recommend lubricating them.

The car will come with maintenance records dating back to the start of my ownership, a set of rubber floor mats for the front seats, two full sets of keys with vintage key fobs, a Haynes manual, the original owner’s manuals, and a box of spare parts also containing the original non-working parts I’ve replaced (glow plug relay, brake vacuum pump, heater control valve, etc.) If the car is staying in Oregon, the current tags are good until 2024. I would like to add that finding parts for the car has become very easy with the opening of Javel in Dallas, Texas last year. The owner is very knowledgeable and there’s never been a part I was unable to get. They even have a large supply of original air filters, if one wishes to revert to the stock air cleaner.

Local pick-up only. Any shipping arrangements must be made by the buyer and must be done so within 30 days of the auction closing.

Due to the car’s age and the aforementioned issues, the car is being sold "AS-IS" with no returns. I am listing the car at no reserve for less than what I paid for it, and have invested over $3,000 additionally in parts and labor. I am happy to answer any questions through eBay’s messaging system.
