1940 Mercury Other

This 1940 Mercury Eight coupe was modified with a chopped top, 1939-style headlights, contoured fender skirts, stainless-steel side-window trim, and a lowered suspension. Finished in black over gray cloth upholstery, the car is powered by a 239ci flathead V8 equipped with an Offenhauser intake manifold and a Holley 390-cfm four-barrel carburetor. The engine is backed by a three-speed manual transmission, and additional equipment includes a 5”-drop front axle, a modified flattened rear crossmember, 16” wheels, whitewall tires, drum brakes, and chrome bumpers. This modified Mercury is now offered with refurbishment photos and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

The body was modified at Menges Twins Speed Shop of Creston, California, with a chopped top, reshaped rear fenders, stainless window trim, and custom fender skirts. The exterior was then painted in Low-Gloss Phantom Black Pearl. Polished stainless-steel trim was fabricated for the side-window frames, and the windshield and side windows were replaced. Vent windows were added along with 1939-style headlights, and other details include a chrome grille, a split windshield, blue-dot taillights, and chrome bumpers with overriders accented in red.

Body-color 16” steel wheels wear baby-moon hubcaps and are mounted with 6.00” Allstate four-ply whitewall tires. The front axle was dropped 5” by Anson Axles, and a modified flattened rear crossmember was installed at Menges Twins Speed Shop to lower the rear and not affect the ride quality.

The cabin features seating trimmed in tufted gray cloth along with color-coordinated door panels. The dashboard is finished in blue, and the headliner and black carpets were replaced during the build. The car is equipped with a heater.

The two-spoke steering wheel frames a sweeping Waltham 110-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 79k miles, approximately 100 of which have been added under current ownership. The gauges for fuel level and charging output are inoperative.

The 239ci flathead V8 is equipped with an Offenhauser intake manifold and a Holley 390-cfm four-barrel carburetor that is finished in gold and topped by a ribbed air-filter lid. The electrical system has been converted to 12-volt operation, and an electric fuel-priming pump has been added.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission.

Photos taken at various stages of the build are presented in the photo gallery.
