1970 Plymouth Barracuda Hardtop
1970 Plymouth Barracuda Hardtop For consignment, a first year example of the fabled E-body Barracuda in 318ci grocery getter form. It is bathed in Alpine White, and is in full factory with no stripes, no wild paint, no extra badging, no wide tires or smoking them, just pure unadulterated Plymouth Barracuda as your everyday man would drive out of the showroom and give to his wife to use. A numbers matching 318ci V8, 2-bbl carb, and numbers matching A904 3-speed automatic transmission are under the hood. It sports a non vinyl top, and of course iconic good but toned down muscle car looks. OHHHHHHH Barra-Cuda! Just fun. Exterior At the front of the car, a traditional satin silver split grille with argent surrounds with single satin silver bezel headlights flanking on either side lead the way. Top mounted signal markers hover on the tops of the quarters and a mustache thin bumper in chrome is just below to frame the grille bottom. A non scooped, non striped steel hood runs from the grille rearward to a pristine stainless framed windshield. Inset chromed door handles are all mounted nicely in the field of white. Moving to the rear quarter on our way we note extremely well minded gaps, and all straight worry free steel, and pure Alpine White paint, no decals just simple straight steel. There are a few chips and dents and dings on this car along with a few drips on the lower painted surfaces. The white paint which also covers the quarter sides and doors continues rust free, and at the back of the car, a traditional white painted valence housing the iconic Plymouth 3 bar tail lights, and a chromed Barracuda badge. The rear showroom quality bumper hangs below the valance, and has a nice inset line. A single standard exhaust plays downward to the road surface on the passengers side only. No dual loud exhaust, just the mile exhale of the 318 cubes. On all 4 corners are standard Plymouth factory hub caps covering 14-inch wheels and wrapped by 205/75R14 thin whitewall rubber from the 15th week of 2010. What a breath of pure fresh air. Interior Keeping the door open to the "no stone left unturned department", we can swing open a door and see showroom quality door panels in black molded vinyl. These have a sleek seamless look. Also showroom quality are 2 thin early 1970's sleek black vinyl high back buckets with textured vinyl center panels and back with built in headrests, some tuck and roll pattern inserts and smooth bolsters. The rear bench carries this motif in back, and these are nearly perfect as well. This all sits in a beautiful calm sea of slightly faded and worn black carpet. Floating above the carpet up front is a well done presentation of the dash featuring a clean as a whistle round lineup of gauges all within a simple black field and a black padded dash top. Seen racing up the center between the buckets is a 70's stylized console in black vinyl, and wood appliqué, and sporting a correct tan ball topped automatic shifter knob. The chrome surround is soiled and some chrome is peeling off. A faux wood rimmed leather covered 3 spoke wheel with a "Michelin Man' styled column attachment fronts this very 70's simple pedestrian dash. Above all this 70's menagerie is a tight black vinyl headliner. All simple factory in here kids. Drivetrain A flip of the hood and within an unrestored engine bay we see an aged look to the numbers matching 318ci V8. It is topped with a 2-barrel carburetor, and has a factory numbers matching A904 3-speed automatic transmission open bank with 7-1/4 inch rear axle. Stock single exhaust is installed. Undercarriage The underside is similar to the engine bay in that it has some road dirt, surface rust and still remains solid. Front independent torsion bars are in and on back leaf springs. Drum brakes are on all 4's. Drive-Ability What a treat to get into this rare non muscled up example of the 318ci V8 Barracuda. The car ran great, did not snap my neck with acceleration and drove just swimmingly. All functions save for the AC were in working order. Just wonderful example looking good on the exterior and interior, non restored engine bay and solid original undercarriage. I'll have my Barracuda served simply and elegantly, no smoke, no mirrors and no loud noise. I love it!
