Here we have a car that is the rarest of the rare, a Super 90 Twin Grill Roadster. The Twin Grill Roadsters already are the rarest of the 356 open cars, with only 249 produced. The last of the line of race-bred removable windshield cars started by the Speedster. Of the 249 Twin Grille Roadsters, only 58 were given the Super 90 Engine. This is the engine that effectively replaced the Carrera 4 Cam engine in 1960. It wasn’t until the Carrera II came out that we saw the Fuhrmann 4-cam engine make another appearance. But if you walked into Hoffman’s New York City dealership in 1961 or 1962 and wanted the top of the line car in terms of performance and looks, it was the Twin Grill Roadster Super 90. John McCoy of Lawrence, Massachusetts did exactly that. He ordered this car with a long list of options, including some GT options. When was the last time you saw Spyder on a Kardex? Well, you will see it on 89672’s Kardex.
This car not only retains its original Super 90 engine 804151 but it also retains its original gearbox 50988, and as a bonus it comes with 5 date matched wheels made by KPZ, dated 9/61.
Here is the list of factory ordered options translated from the original German Kardex:
1. Sunvisor with mirror, right and left
2. Top Protection (boot)
3. Reclining Seat
4. Luggage Cushion
5. Locking Antenna
6. Radio Mount (this is very rare!)
7. Day/Night interior mirror
8. 2 Armrests
9. 2 Head Rests
10. Fog Lamps
11. Beige Coco Mats
12. Travel Kit
13. Electric Hand Lamp
14. 2 Touch up paint
15. Leather Trunk Straps
16. Becker Grand Prix Radio
17. Gear Shift Lock
18. Spyder Mirror
19. Vinyl Suitcase
That’s a total of 19 options --very heavily appointed for a 356, most cars had one or two options. This car has all the raw materials to be a top notch car at any concours, with matching engine/gearbox and date matched wheels. Take that and the long list of options and you would have few cars on the grass that could claim exclusivity like this car. Factory installed Spyder mirror on the fender. Factory ordered luggage. Factory ordered travel kit. Factory installed radio. Rarest of the rare, even more rare than a Carrera Speedster even, they made 151 of those, they only made 58 cars like this, and I doubt most were this hand picked in the options.
All of that is the good news, the bad news is this car lived a hard life. It looks to have been wrecked in the left rear and repaired badly, please study the pics to see what I mean. Lots of metal work was done on this car like new floors, battery box, etc but much of it is only partially done and much will probably need to be redone. But don’t despair about being upside down on the restoration. Yes, this car will need a full restoration and then some. Correcting all the wrecks, bad welding and rust will be time consuming and expensive. But the last piece of good news is the end value. Just recently the same color Super 90 Twin Grill was offered in concours condition for $625,000. At that eventual price point, that leaves you almost $500,000 to restore this car correctly. You read that right, almost half a million to give this car the restoration it deserves. Not many 356s leave you this much room to restore them, making this car unique in a whole new way.
Included with the car is everything that is pictured including front seats, top frame, and the Super 90 Camber Compensating bar -- all of these are pictured. Also included is a brand new Windshield made by Pilkington.
So yes, the car will need a tremendous amount of work, but the finished product will be an extremely rare Porsche and we all know the name of the game in Porsche is rarity. If I had to guess I would think this would be a million dollar car someday based on the rareness and long list of options. It will be up to the new owner to get it there but I guarantee it will be a fun journey to make it from here to the concours field.
