Description:
1967 Other Makes SUNBEAM ALPINE
****ONE OF THE LAST AFFORDABLE BRITISH ROADSTERS AVAILABLE IN TODAY'S MARKET****BELIEVED TO BE AN ORIGINAL 57,000 MILE CAR.
WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT AND HOPEFULLY BIDDING ON IS A NUMBERS MATCHING SERIES V SUNBEAM ALPINE WHICH HAS JUST UNDERGONE A COSMETIC RESTORATION IN 2015. THE WORK, N MY OPINION, OOKS NICE. I ASKED MY MECHANIC HOW HE WOULD GRADE THE EXTERIOR PAINT/BODYWORK ON A SCALE OF 1-10. HE GAVE IT A 9, AYING THAT “THE BODY IS VERY STRAIGHT AND THAT THE PAINT IS SUPER GLOSSY.” I WOULD BE A BIT MORE CONSERVATIVE BUT I DO THINK IT LOOKS CLEAN AND SHINY AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PHOTOS! THE DETAILER WHO BUFFED IT SAID THAT THE BODY IS “STRAIGHT AS AN ARROW.”
THE WORK ON PAINT AND INTERIOR WAS JUST FINISHED IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST, 015. BODY IS CLEAN AND THE COLOR IS THE CORRECT SHADE OF CARNIVAL RED.
NUMBERS MATCHING:
- The original 1725cc 4 cylinder engine is the numbers matching block installed from the Sunbeam factory. The numbers on the engine block pad match the numbers in the car's serial number B395013026. The engine remains carbureted by dual Zenith Stromberg 150s.
- The paint code is “39” for Carnival Red, xterior paint is correct color.
- The interior is the correct color, lack with black piping.
- Four Speed stick shift transmission (date codes not checked)
FRESH 2 STAGE CLEARCOATED CUSTOM PAINT August 2015: Someone said it “Looks like a red mirror.” The paint glows in the sun and has nice depth and reflections, s you can see in the photos. I think the sides look darn straight when viewing. Looks clean! During the paint process, he body was sanded down and trim stripped off. Door handles, ntenna, enses, umper, onneau studs, uttons, irrors, ipers, runk, ide emblems, tc. were removed before paint. The complete exterior was primed with a catalyzed polyester primer surfacer. The primer was guide coated in black and was then wet sanded with a block by hand twice. The body was then coated in Carnival Red DuPont basecoat, ollowed by 3-4 coats of urethane clear. The clear coat was then color sanded with 1500 grit and polished with an electric buffer by a professional detailer. The engine compartment was repainted as well. This car has always been painted red and has never had a color change. I did not see any indication of the car having ever been wrecked. The rear bumper does have a slight bend in it from a previous owner (looks like they bumped something while backing up), ut this is the extent of 'accident' damage that I have seen on the car. The front lower valance panel had a small fatigue crack and dent in it which were straightened out and welded. The front headlamp bezels were repainted separately.
NEW INTERIOR UPHOLSTERY August 2015 The interior of this alpine still has the original steering wheel, ash pad, ash, auges, enter console. Someone added a radio at one point. The original bucket seats have been rebuilt with new internal foam and new black upholstery, n the original stitching pattern. Driver and passenger seats are both adjustable with tilt and forward/back. The front kick panels have been replaced new by the upholstery shop. Full loop style black carpeting is new throughout, rom heel pad in front to rear area forward of convertible top well. Black door panels were found in used condition in the trunk when I acquired the car and are also added. Original dash pad is there with some cracks for character. :) Dash switches and gauges appear to be stock, lthough I'm not sure about that clock... Rear view mirror looks like it is the original from 1967.
ORIGINAL STEERING WHEEL AND HORN RING! How many of these have been changed over the years... too many. The horn works when the car is running. “Beep!” Also has the original style floor shifter and “Sunbeam Alpine” shifter ball. Chrome ashtray is there too.
NEW BLACK ROBINS CONVERTIBLE TOP August 2015 Yes, he top is brand new from Sunbeam Specialties in Campbell, A and includes the new clear rear window. Just installed with the new interior upholstery. Top is the “crushed grain vinyl.”
Side windows roll up and down easily and the doors shut solid with a confident sound. No cracks in glass.
Exterior chrome and trim appear to be correct Still has the 1725 emblems (were removed for paint) on the fenders and trunk lid. The rear turn signal brake lamp bezels appear to be rechromed or new. A previous owner had several items rechromed and I found them in a bag in the trunk still wrapped in newspaper from the chrome shop with newspaper dates from the late1980s to about 2003. Rechromed interior door pull handles, nterior window crank handles, nterior door handles, ear pillar caps. “ALPINE” fender script chrome emblems are new. Original grill chrome/stainless trim shines well. The exterior chrome dual “bullet” style mirrors are new. All new tonneau cover studs. Bumpers are not rechromed and do have some weathering, s do the chrome trunk hinges.
Nostalgic SLOT MAG ALLOY WHEELS look period correct for the sixties and are polished, o add a nice accent. They are 13”, ust like original wheels were on Alpines. The tires are in good shape.
Starter has been replaced with a rebuilt unit, arch 2015.
Battery replaced March 2015.
Front fuel lines were replaced.
Rear brakes were rebuilt in March 2015, ith new wheel cylinders, ew brake hardware kit, nd brake shoes. Drums were machined to promote good contact. 2 brake lines in the rear were replaced. Retains the disk brakes in front which were original on Series V Alpines. The emergency brake is in working condition.
Factory spare wheel in trunk, long with a couple of tools.
I have not driven the car as much as I would have liked, ince for the duration that I have owned it, t has been in the process of having restoration work done to it. I do like the way it runs, ngine sounds good and strong to my ear and I have not seen any smoke from the tailpipe. It drove right up on and off the trailer when I shipped it off to the upholstery shop and I have driven it around my neighborhood. I drove it today around town and took the photos that you see. I had a blast driving it and was itching to put that new top down! Clutch felt fine to me and the steering felt smooth and easy. I had no problems as I stopped several times, urned the car around, hut it off numerous times and it started right back up for me each time. I've run it with my mechanic many times and have not seen any sign of overheating or obvious leaks. I wish I could spend more time driving it and having fun showing it off, ut unfortunately my time is now up with this little part of English history. It's time for this little car's next chapter in life!
The car is CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CALIFORNIA WITH VALID PLATES that expire in March 2016. I have the clear title/pinkslip in hand in my name ready to transfer to you. There is no emissions check required in California for buyers of this vehicle.
As far as rust goes, am not aware of any rust holes on the outer body; I have also looked around inside the trunk, nder the hood, nd I have not seen any. I looked at the trunk floor today and did not see any rot holes, ven in the spare tire well.
I feel that this car would be a good investment, ince it appears as mostly original and still retains the original Sunbeam engine. If you've looked around, 'm sure you've noticed that many of these now have engines in them from other cars. With the numbers matching original engine, orrect body color, ostly original looking components, nd correct interior; I don't see how you could go wrong on this.
Of course...I guess I won't feel too bad if someone buys it to install a 289 and make it a high performance Sunbeam Tiger replica... Just don't tell me about it if you're planning on putting in some Nissan or Toyota engine or I will start convulsing and will need a medic.
The Series V was the most refined Sunbeam Alpine built by the Rootes Group in the late 1960s, oming equipped with factory front disk brakes and dual carburetors and the largest Alpine engine produced, he 1725cc. I believe these vehicles are underrated -- as they were peppy little fun cars that were road race proven many times over.
The reserve is a very affordable and reasonable amount, n my opinion. I believe the car is worth far more than what the reserve is. I do need to sell the car since I must do some house addition work.
Some trivia! James Bond 007 and Maxwell Smart Spy Cars-(Alpines were used in “Dr. No,” James Bond Movie, Get Smart!” TV Show, Get Smart” movie with Steve Carell, Commando” and several other famous television shows and films)
