1958 MG MGA 27k, 55yrs owned, VIDEO
1958 MG MGA --
1958 MGA 2 Owner, Same Owner Since 1963 Only 27,300 Original Miles $5k Major Service in 2018, Excellent Driver! Garage Find, Parked Since '77 - See the Video! VIN: HDR4344923 Engine: 15GB-U-H-34775 We purchased this '58 MGA a friend of ours who has owned the car since 1963. He bought the car with just 2,500 miles on the clock, with the intention of using it at a summer driver at his Illinois lake house. He drove the car until 1977, putting 27,300 miles on the car... during his 14 years of active ownership. 1977 was the last time he drove the car; he had a significant collection of cars at the time, and he had had his fun with the MGA. The car was parked in his climate-controlled warehouse along with a handful of his other cars, and there it stayed until early 2018, when we rolled it out into the daylight for the first time in over 40 years. Over the course of the last six or so months, we have been going through the car in its entirety, tending to all of the car's mechanical needs and adding mileage when the weather cooperates. We have driven the car 60 (and slowly climbing...) miles since completing the following service items: Remove fuel tank and send out to be redone, replace fuel pump, fuel sending unit, and fuel filter. Change oil, oil filter, and oil pressure line. Rebuild carburetors, gasket set, replace spark plugs, distributor cap & rotor, points & condenser, and ignition coil. Replace air filter and both batteries. Replace brake and clutch master cylinder, brake hoses, and wheel cylinders. As it sits now, this is an extremely well-sorted, low-mile, fun-to-drive roadster that is an absolutely fantastic example with the exception of some paint-related drawbacks. Exterior: - Please see the video along with the listing, as the car is shown in detail. Every blemish on the car is shown close-up and in direct sunlight. - The car was resprayed the same ivory color once in the early 70s, and it was not done to a very high standard. Please defer to the video for this. There are a handful of blemishes from when the car was in long-term storage and things dripped on the car. There isn't dust under the paint or bubbling or anything like that, but there are some stain-like spots. - Extremely dry, well-stored car. No rust bubbling at on any of the body panels. - Glass and light lenses are all clear and crack-free. - Black top is in great shape, as are the side curtains. These are all original, and the former owner of the car told us he never put the top up once in his 55 years of ownership. When we picked the car up from long-term storage, it had actually been stored with the top down. The rear plastic is discolored, but there are no tears, creases, or other real signs of age. - Wire wheels are in nice shape, with no damage and just a bit of chipping on the outer rim. Tires are from the 70s and should be replaced due to their age. No dry rot, flat spots, or anything like that since the car was in climate-controlled storage, but these tires are far outdated. - Chrome is excellent throughout and has never been refinished. No oxidation or damage. Interior: - Bone stock original, with the exception of the Motorola radio, which the owner installed when he got the car in 1963. Not currently functional. - Seats are free of any significant damage, but they do show their age. A nice patina, consistent with an unrestored example of this vintage. - There is a burst on the rearmost part of the center armrest. - When the owner got the car it only had about 2500 miles on it. When he hit 22,900 miles the odometer stopped working, so he swapped it out with a new one and proceeded to run that new odometer up to about 4400, for a total of just over 27k total miles. The original speedometer reading 22,900 will come with the car as well. - Speedometer/odometer, fuel, and temp gauges are all functional, but the tachometer is not. - Lights, signals, fogs, wipers, and dash lights are functional. The radio is not, same with the blower. - Carpeting is original throughout, and is in nice shape with the exception of some fraying in the driver's footwell. Under the Hood / Underbody: - This car retains its original drivetrain, a 1500cc Inline-4 and 4spd manual transmission. The car did not see any major services during the first twenty active years of its life, and was just recommissioned after 40 years of storage with the major service you see outlined at the beginning of this listing. The car truly runs and drives every bit as well as a 27k-mile car should. Fantastic. The owner put a sport exhaust on it in the early 70s, so the car has a really, really sweet exhaust note to it. Not too loud or exhaust-leaky-sounding, but nice and racey with a great growl when backing off the throttle. - The car will come with the original spare, tool kit, knock-off hammer, and roadside kit, in addition to a $5k receipt for services performed since taking the car out of storage in early 2018. - Please take a look through the underbody photos, as it's documented in detail. Underbody is pretty impressive considering the age and originality. The wooden floorboards have never been replaced, and there is a through burn where the exhaust sits below the driver's floor. Covered up from the top with the car's 1965 license plate, ha! The car is structurally very, very sound; the frame is nice and solid. Old, peeling undercoating makes the underbody look uglier than it really is. This car has been in dry storage for the last 50 years and is extremely well-preserved.
