The MG TF roadster represents the zenith of MG’s venerable T-Series.
Its sloping grill and faired-in headlights, added a modern take to the TD and is certainly among a handful of really superb designs to emerge from Her Majesty's England in the Fifties.
The cream of the crop is certainly the TF 1500.
Proudly carrying the “1500” badges on the sides of the hoods to visually distinguish them from the 1250s; only 3,600 were made…
Sixty years later, prime, original, rust free examples of the breed are very rare and among the most sought-after post-war collector cars, routinely invited to mingle with fine European Classics on the lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and other prestigious events.
The MG TF 1500 not only charms with its fabulous good looks, it also is oodles of fun to drive.
Inexpensive spare parts are readily available and club support is exemplary.
The amazing example for auction here, VIN #XPEG1241, was built for export to California, USA.
In 1959, it sold at Continental Motors in Witter, CA to an engineer and pilot who lives in the affluent community of Palos Verdes.
He has always kept the car garaged and pampered.
Back in the 90’s, it underwent a very thorough and documented, $30,000.00 restoration.
Let's now inspect this exceptional MG in more detail, from top to bottom, inside and out…
Exterior:
T
TheThe The Roadster features a very long hood and a 2-seater cockpit just ahead of the rear axle.MG's coachwork presents stunningly, with not a single bubble, ding or dent of note.Being a life-long California car, this MG possesses an immaculate rust-free body with all original panels and superior fit.
Never,EVER being damaged or having a panel replacedis an extremely rare event with any 60-year old car.
It is, in fact, also an original black car.
Black is perhaps the most iconic color for an MG TF.
Carefully color-sanded and buffed, the finish displays a mirror-like luster and is virtually free of blemishes.
Along the passenger side running board, there are 2 small chips in the paint (See photo above).
All brightwork, weatherstripping, and glass presents immaculately.
Although a British Roadster should only be caught with the top up in the most severe weather conditions, such as tennis ball-size hail, you surely will appreciate the StaFast tan convertible top...
...complete with concourse-ready, top frame.
A set of 4 superb, side curtains, correct for theMG TFcompletes the picture.
All 4 side curtains (front & rear) stow behind the seats.
Noteoriginal engine crank is correctly mounted to therear.
Zippered, canvastonneau cover provides protection when parking the car; kids of all ages like to hide underneath.
Amazingly comfortable cruising is possible during periods of inclement, or rainy, weather and the tonneau covering the passenger area.
Immaculate wire wheels with center knock-offs are shod with newer YOKOHAMA S-701 radials of the correct size, 165/SR15 with innertubes.
While we’re down on one knee, let’s take a look underneath.
More important than shiny paint is a healthy undercarriage.
Ol' Sherlock himself could inspect this car's belly with his magnifying glass and would not find an ounce of corrosion.
Befitting a body-off frame restoration, the car's undercarriage has received lots of attention.
Frame rails are rust free and straight.
A close look at the rear axle and suspension confirms: everything is clean and tight!
Most importantly, there is absolutely NO RUST or collision repair or any other mishap that would cause the enthusiast sleepless nights.
Surveying the car's straight and smooth coachwork and immaculate undercarriage, we marvel at every minute detail.
In fact, this fine example of the marque could be proudly displayed at a local car show or Concours d'Elegance.
We'll inspect the interior next, shall we?
Compared to the minimalist seating provisions sometimes found in Fifties' Roadsters, the MG TF is luxuriously appointed with its correct 1955 seats, freshly upholstered with horsehair pads and deep red, vat-dyed CONNOLLY leather and piping of superb quality.
Leather-covered door panels, all new windlacing, a full, black carpet kit, complete this interior; it's truly as new as it can be.
Thousands of Dollars’ worth of heritage approved restoration supplies make this interior truly stunning to the eye and touch.
Inside the cockpit, we find the classic Roadster dash of the Fifties.
The upgraded Moto-Lita wood & aluminum steering wheel is the only aftermarket item but beautifully complements the interior trim.
Original banjo steering wheelis alsoincluded.
The fascinating array of octagonal JAEGER instruments with graceful chrome bezels and black Bakelite knobs sparkle like jewelry.
The tactile pleasures are markedly increased by the knowledge that everything actually works; except for the clock - which -like the Classic style of this MG is timeless!
Original Owner’s Manual is included.
Rear compartment behind the seats stores the side curtains.
Everything about this stunning interior is testimony to its high quality restoration and subsequent loving care
Alright, let’s have a look under the hood.
How clean is this MG, really?
Find out by inspecting the engine bay up close or with a magnifying glass.
This MGTF is powered by its original, numbers matching 1,466-cc XPEG pushrod motor that has earned its reputation of being unbreakable.
It may come as a revelation to many, but all you ever need to keep this strong 4-banger going is a screwdriver, a hammer, a set of pliers, and maybe a little bit of baling wire. For anybody paying his (or her) own bills, it surely provides peace of mind to know there are no black boxes, injectors, electronics, and fancy stuff like that. The MG TF is a minimalist car designed to deliver maximum fun!
Tire changing, and original tools are included.
Original ID plates show all the correct, critical information.
The 1,466-cc four-cylinder power plant inhales through dual SU carburetors.
It sounds crisp and runs smoothly, like a turbine, with superb oil pressure, cold or hot.
Everything that needed repair or replacement was repaired or replaced.
The car has been driven just a few thousand miles since the $30,000 restoration was completed.
With appearance and drivability of a car that’s always been pampered and meticulously maintained, this MG TF 1500 is mechanically as strong as it is cosmetically.
Speaking of cosmetics, let us stress how straight the body is, how sparkling the trim, how glossy the paint: the car can best be described as Outstanding Overall Condition.
Okay, it’s a beautiful Fall day in Palos Verdes, let’s take her for a test drive.

Naturally, a lovingly restored, fresh car should drive like a new car drove back then, 62 years ago, perhaps better.
Drivability:
The MG runs strong, so strong, indeed, that it feels a bit like driving a big Austin Healey.
Turn on the ignition, set the choke, pull out the starter knob, and the motor comes to life instantly.
A sporty exhaust note alerts the senses.
Put the floor-mounted shifter into gear, release the clutch, and off you go!

Check out the flawlessly working gauges; they indicate this MG to be perfectly healthy, without overheating and with great oil pressure, cold or hot.
Though 62 years old, this MG still maneuvers comfortably in today's bustling traffic-- thusly, freeway driving is not a daunting task at all.
Even in car-crazed Southern California, the "1500" attracts plenty of attention wherever you go.
In a world of tank-like trucks disguised as SUVs, a jet-black MG Roadster spells FUN in capital letters and reminds everybody that size does matter:
Smaller means quicker, more agile.
It's a proven formula: "The smaller the car, the more fun it provides!"
Beautiful from every imaginable angle, this fine Roadster convinces by the sum of its details:
body, paint, interior, chrome, accessories . . . everything is fresh and thus belies the MG's age to the fullest.
Isn't this what it's all about?
To escape from the rigors of work, the boundaries of having to fit in, the ennui of a quasi-virtual life.
You owe it to yourself to get away from it all, once in a while.
Well, this show-and-go TF is the E-ticket ride to automobile happiness.
Here is a prime opportunity to acquire a genuine, healthy, MG TF 1500.
She's the proverbial California car; even 62- years old, she performs like brand new and looks as elegant as ever.
There's but one stumbling block on the way to MG Heaven: Original, Immaculate TF 1500s almost never come to market.
