1980 Mercedes 300TD wagon - beyond rare turbo with manual transmission UNICORN
1980 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series
Perhaps the rarest possible W123 / S123 wagon ever - a turbo, manual-transmission (4-speed) with original paint, no bodywork (body is not perfect), and the 3rd-row rear-facing bench seat. It's the car Mercedes should have made, but never did (maybe a few were made for the German domestic market, not sure). This car was originally a normal 300TD, but was retrofitted with a larger-than-stock turbo and damn, it's fast! I did take the liberty of installing an original "TURBO DIESEL" badge on it. Looks rad.The only reason I'm selling it is I found a pristine 1978 wagon in Germany (non-turbo, sadly, but manual) in a rare light green color and I had to have it. This blue wagon is faster of course, if not quite as nice. Still, I would drive it anywhere. It runs great and is really fun to drive. Manual wind-up windows - way more reliable than the electric ones. No radio, but I can include an original Becker "big knob" unit if desired (would ship it to you).Positives- ORIGINAL PAINT, NO BODYWORK - beautiful dark blue color ("Dunkelblau" 904); body is not perfect, but is straight and clean- no underbody rust, no significant rust at all, just a few minor bits where the paint has been compromised; overall it looks fantastic- TURBO!!! bigger than stock, TONS of power! and the turbo makes that awesome whistling sound, so cool.- 4-sp MANUAL TRANSMISSION- runs perfectly, very strong motor, really fun to drive- 3rd-row rear-facing bench seat- generally very nice interior- no sunroof (they are really problematic, I know, I have one on another car)- original body-color hubcaps- factory mudflaps, plus an extra set- factory roof rack- new battery- newly-tinted windows done to very high standard ($1200), including clear UV protection on the windshield, which isn't easy to do- lots of recent repairs (see below - $5400)- all fluids recently changed- it looks AMAZING with that dark blue color and the dark tint, seriously coolNegatives- some dings, some *minor* rust here and there; none of these are truly rust-free- instrument cluster is non-original; everything works except tachometer- true mileage unknown - I would guess approx. 150k miles- no AC (was removed)- central locking doesn't work, but you can lock individual doorsNeutrals- I have not done a compression check, but the engine fires up instantly (after glowplug goes out, of course) and the power is excellent, so I think the compression is good.- Currently registered in Oregon, since it's far cheaper there and I have a place there. Since the car does not require smog in CA, you can easily register it there if desired.Just repaired:- Replaced instrument cluster, odometer (tachometer not working)- replaced worn out front and rear flex discs, broken center carrier bearing- replaced front springs and installed lower shims- resealed engine oil filter housing- replaced bend drag link and damper- rebuilt shifter tower- replaced rear springs, install new upper shims- installed 3rd row seat- installed used driver door latch to make door locking- replaced broken rear sway bar links- installed new air filterbuffer- installed missing wheel lugs- changed oil and filter- fixed hornCurrent registration (Oregon) and insurance. Car is located in San Diego and can be picked up in person or shipped at buyer's discretion (and expense). Payment can be Paypal (no fees), cash, or bank deposit/zelle. Car can be driven anywhere - totally solid and reliable.
