This1982 Mercedes Benz 380SEC had been sitting for many years when I bought it about a year ago. The gas tank was empty and it had a bunch of new parts on it, (distributor cap, rotor, wires). So I think the previous owner ran out of gas and parked it because he couldn't figure it out. Good news for the car though. That means the fuel system was empty for all those years while it sat idle. The gas tank and all the fuel injection was in great shape.
I own a German auto repair shop so this was an easy project.
I replaced the fuel pump and filter, tires, the ignition control module, ignition coil, all filters and fluids and it was off to the races.
I did check the timing chain and it has been updated to the dual row timing chain and rails. If you don't know what this is, it was a big problem on this engine that the timing chain only had one row. Think, bicycle chain. They were too weak and they broke. The update was a double bicycle chain as pictured.
I also had the original Becker radio refurbished by Becker Autosound and did lots of cleaning.
The body is extremely solid. The fender chrome eyebrows are not hiding rust as was the common practice back in the day. The paint is tired and faded as I tried to show in a couple of the pictures. All said and done it looks good from 20 feet.
I had planned to keep this car and drive it but I quite simply haven't. I currently have fifteen cars. Some collectable, some drivers, some projects. I have to let some go because I am out of space.
I haven’t really driven it a lot so a cross country trip might be a gamble. That being said, I can not think of any reason it wouldn’t make the trip. I would recommend some local driving before trusting it on a two thousand mile adventure.
