This garage kept 220D starts instantly and easily, runs strong, and has beena super economic and eccentric daily driver. This car turns heads everywhere it goes. You could be the center of attention in this gorgeous example of automotive history. Get fabulous fuel economy from the 4 cylinder indirect injection diesel. The OM621 motor is paired to an easy shifting 4 speed manual transmission with column shifter for that extra vintage flair.
This machine is in great overall mechanical condition, and most of, if not all of the hard and laborious mechanical work has been done.
Thousands of dollars spent and hundreds of hours to get this vehicle to this point. All vintage Mercedes-Benz sedans suffer from the same rusty floorpans. This vehicle has had all of those issues addressed. All new cockpit floorpans, welded in, and coated with POR rustproofing. All structural rust repaired and mitigated. New door, windshield and trunk seals. New white headliner has been installed, no easy task!
Aesthetic interior restoration work does remain to finish this vehicle out, but even though the interior is presently unfinished, and will require some work, it is still functional. All doors work, all windows roll up / down and there are no missing door hardware. The interior door cards are however missing, as are the carpets in this car. The original rear bench seat with white vinyl is in good shape. The front seats are dark blue replacements from a 1966 W112. W112 seats are wider and offer more comfort than the original W110 economy seats could afford.
The 4 speed, column shift manual transmission, shifts well and feels responsive. Easy in and out of reverse, and all forward gears. New shift bushings in the column shifter.
MOTOR:
The car is powered by the famed 4 cylinder NA mechanical Bosch injected OM621 Diesel motor. OM621 is solid cast iron construction both block and head, with 5 main crank bearings. This is the engine that gave Mercedes-Benz the reputation for million mile motors. Thousands of these cars are still on the road today all over the world.The motor in this car is a great running unit. No oil or fluid leaks! No excessive smoking. Does not burn oil, and has no 'blow-by'. Starts easy in cold weather with upgraded electrical system and new OEM Glow Plugs. Since our ownership oil changes have always been performed at regular 5000 mile intervals, and always with Liqui Moly Classic Engine Oil 20W50; a product specifically formulated for vintage Mercedes-Benz cast iron diesel engines. The original milage of the motor is unknown but suspect that it must be uner 200K, due to the quick starts and powerful performance from this engine. No blow-by, no oil consumption and only normal diesel smoke when at operating temperature.
