1979 Mercedes-Benz 240D

1979 Mercedes Benz 240D Sedan

Mercedes-Benz introduced the W123 four-door executive car in January, 1976 to replace the W115. The overall dimensions and wheelbase were lengthened, and styling was updated to a less angular more contemporary look. The new look included round head lights with inboard fog lamps in all models except the 280 and 280E which had large rectangular headlights. Later the European models were all changed to the rectangular headlights. North American models retained the round complement. In 1980/81 the carbureted 280 was replaced with the fuel-injected 280E. W123 introduced many innovations in both safety and styling including ABS brakes, retractable steering columns, and airbags for the driver.

For consignment, a well-used Mercedes Benz 240D, with 254,000 miles on her. Showing some rust, and body imperfections with original paint, and all nice chrome trimmings. Retrofitted A/C to R134A, and all original interior in Mercedes Benz leather, and we have a panzer built tank ready to take on another 250K!

Exterior
Bathed in Pastelwiess, this car has its original paint. It is looking fairly good, with a few chips off and a newer front drivers' quarter due to a mishap. Behind the wheel wells are repairs with invasive rust showing through. Some surface rust is noted on the front next to a shiny large MB front grille complete with trim pointed star topper. Bumpers are looking good, as is side trimmings and handles for this 4 door. Overall considering exterior is original paint, it is in good condition.

Interior
Corresponding and complimentary to the exterior weiss, is a nicely preserved blue interior. Buckets for the front, and a bench for the rear, there is plenty of room in this cruiser. A central console with window controls, 4-speed manual shifter, a Blaupunkt stereo, A/C and clean instrumentation are up front. Door panels on all doors are clean and slightly worn, but good condition. Blue carpet is original and clean, and the headliner in off white is tight and tear free. The windshield is cracked on the driver's side and appears to have suffered from a suction device possibly placed there as explaining the round cracks.

Drivetrain
An original 2.4 liter engine with consigner stated recently replaced pressure plate graces the engine bay. A 4-speed manual transmission is on back.

Undercarriage
An overall patina covers the solid undercarriage, and very little (if any) surface rust is noted. Floor pans are nice and solid, as are rockers. Coil springs provide the ride, and for stopping you have front disc brakes and rear drums. The bottom center of the radiator support shows some invasive rust. Lower interior doors at the jamb are all clean.

Drive-Ability
This car started easily, and idled with its quintessential diesel rumble, but smoothly. It accelerated as a diesel would, shifted smoothly, and ran nicely. The ride was smooth, and all functions were working fine. The fan for the A/C was a bit weak.

A high mileage diesel, as they tend to do, this car was well kept, consigner says they changed the oil every 1.500 miles, and it was garaged when not in use. Priced reasonably, readout for another 250K!
