It was imported from Germany to the US by a military equipment collector in the 1990's. Unimog's are very uncommon in the United States because of differing regulations and requirements - most of those available in the United States have been imported by dealers or enthusiasts.
The name "Unimog" is an acronym for "Universal-Motor-Gerat, "? with Gerat meaning device in German. Mercedes-Benz first produced the Unimog to aid in agricultural use, as it provided much needed power take-off to operate heavy machinery in fields or forests. It also featured permanent AWD with equally sized wheels and could be driven at higher speeds than standard farm tractors. The Unimog has very high ground clearance and a flexible frame (acting as part of the suspension) which allows the vehicle to drive comfortably and capably over extreme terrain. Mercedes-Benz still produces the Unimog and the model is often used as a military vehicle, firetruck, snowplow, and a road-rail vehicle.
