Must sell this beautiful car, most powerful SL of the decade, best model year.
1986 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class 560SL Roadster - Very Rare Color, Collectible
Some notes on this model from Haggerty---In 1986, Mercedes-Benz shipped its most powerful SL of the decade to the U.S. in the 560SL. The car was also the heaviest of the 1971-89 R107 SLs that Mercedes produced, but the new 5.5-liter V-8 engine's 227 hp did a fine job of mitigating that fact. Top speed was much improved (from 110 mph in the 380SL to 130 mph), and the car was quicker from a standstill to 60 mph by about 4 full seconds.
The engine was much torquier, too, which greatly improved the cars' dynamics. Likewise, the car received a new rear suspension and a limited-slip differential to better handle the added torque and power. Mercedes-Benz also added anti-lock brakes, leather upholstery, an alarm system, and an air bag, all of which better suited the car's $48,000 price tag.
Today, many enthusiasts gravitate towards the 560SL as it retains some of the original lines of the pagoda SLs while carrying with it all of the R107's advances. It remains a popular choice for those enthusiasts who value verve and build quality for a low price of entry.---
These 560SL roadsters are one of the few cars that are actually increasing in value over the last 5 years.
This is not a "low key" car. It's fun to own and drive, but people will compliment you at gas stations and such. Even with the paint and trim issues it has right now, it gets a lot of attention, all of the time.
You are welcome to come look at this car, drive it, or send a mechanic over to look at it. It is being sold from Tampa. You can come pick it up, or I will assist with shipping. (at your expense and responsibility.) Runs and drives pretty good (all cylinders have compression and spark) All photos were taken in the last few days.
I drove it solo from Louisville to Tampa a few months ago.
Known Issues -
I gave this car to my younger brother for the last 7-8 years, and I can't say he took very good care of it.
I have it back now, but life circumstances are forcing me to sell it.
Please note: This car is 32 years old. I'm going to tell you what I know, and try to take pics of anything I can.
Here are the known issues...
- Paint issues on corner of hard top, and a few other places. (pictured)- The carpet is missing from rear floorboards. (My opinion is that it should all be replaced. Carpet costs $450 for entire interior. Rear passenger floorboard has some rust issues.)- Probably needs a few fuel injectors (Injectors are about $40 each. All cylinders have spark and compression. It sat in a warehouse for a few years, so fuel distributor might need a rebuild to get it running perfect ($70-$80). As it hits higherrpm ranges, it misses less and soundsgood.- Some chrome peeling inside of rims, but still looks good to the casual observer.- Linkage for seats needs fixed. (They don't adjust properly. Probably need lubed. I'm 5'10" and fit in the driver's seat comfortably.)- AC system needs work. (No idea what is going on there. No one has ever tried to fix it since I've had it. Fan is loud.)- Interior has some issues here and there. (see pics) Clear coat chips on console.Missingone fender chrome. You can buy a whole set for $80.- Top has a few small rips, and mildew. The mechanism that opens the top needs a plastic piece replaced (see image). It functions fine, but I'd replace that part.- There is a piece of trim not attached to the driver's side door. It is in the trunk.- Some rust on driver's side rear floorboard, and also the trunk.- Carpet in trunk needs replaced.
Also has new parts:
- New distributor cap and rotor.- New spark plus and wires.- New fuel filter andgas line to fuel filter.- New exhaust, from the catalytic converter back
Ask any questions or see/drive it prior to bidding.
There are several small things to fix, but it's an overall solid car you can start drivingright now. Bid With Confidence.
You'll be surprised at how low the reserve is for this car. If you've ever wanted one of these, this is your chance. If it doesn't meet the reserve, I might offer it to you at your highest bid. If it does meet the reserve, you'll own it. So take a shot at it. There is no doubt I'm sellingthis car soon, one way or another.Bidding is starting low. Contact for inspection.
