Description:
1987 Mercedes-Benz 300-Series
For your consideration is a 1987 300 SDL with a 1985 OM617 engine and 1990 leather interior. If you are continuing to read this description, then you may know what the previous statement means.
I have owned this 31 year old vehicle for almost three (3) years and have no issues with it.
Used as a backup when the primary vehicle is being serviced.
It is garage kept and in great condition for its age & mileage.
It has received less than 2,500 miles of service since taking ownership.
Considering the age of this Mercedes with almost 284K on the clock, it is not perfect cosmetically, but presents itself very well and gets attention.
It is not 100% rust free, but there is very little to criticize.
Not many nice 126's are out there like this one!
I put about 250 miles on this SDL last week and mechanically coupled with ride quality, it is solid.
Everything still works as designed.
It can sit for months and maybe two or three drops of oil are discovered on the floor when pulled out of the garage.
Recent (July) service and current state inspection performed by an authorized Bosch dealer.
New battery and Michelin tires were installed last fall because the tires were starting to show minor symptoms of dry rot.
The decision to list this vehicle for sale here on eBay, is to free up garage space.
This W126 was purchased from a retired Mercedes-Benz Mechanic who had the car for a number of years.
Technically, I am the 3rd owner.
The following is his story about the SDL:
"I am a retired Mercedes mechanic and have a truly unique and awesome car for sale... my 1987 300 SDL with a 1985 OM617 engine and 1990 leather interior.
In my opinion, this 5 cylinder 617 engine is the very best that Mercedes ever made. A client of mine had this car, but the 6 cylinder OM603 engine had an issue with the aluminum head because of the trap oxidizer and needed replacing.
She didn't want to go through the expense or trouble of replacing the engine, so I bought the car (rust free and otherwise excellent) from her and replaced the engine with a strong 617 engine from a 1985 300SD that then had 105,000 miles on it. The compression on all cylinders for this engine is between 315 and 325 PSI, which is perfect.
The car also has the appropriate transmission that was rebuilt by a professional shop called Transmission by Ron (TBR) in Atlanta, a known and reputable Mercedes shop referenced in many Mercedes forums.
The car was then resprayed in the original Mercedes color: Smoked Silver Metallic, with all glass and trim removed for the respray. This was done by Wilson Body Works in Richmond, VA. There is absolutely no rust at all in or on the car.
I have replaced the entire front end with new OEM Mercedes parts, including bushings, tie rods, control arms, etc. I have also refurbished and refinished all of the interior wood trim, which looks superb.
The car has the original owners manuals, tool kit and first aid kit. It has recent Bilstein shocks and Michelin tires, which you can see in the photos. A new hood pad was installed. The brake rotors and calipers front and rear as well as the master cylinder were replaced at restoration and are all strong.
I am a stickler for details and have made sure that everything works on this car... seats, windows, sunroof, gauges, cruise control, antenna, seat heaters, AC, heat, climate control, interior and exterior lights, etc... all have been thoroughly gone through and are functioning just like they should. The car is garage kept.
This car cost $60,000 in 1987, and now has a better, more efficient engine and a newer interior in excellent shape. It rides like a dream. You will not be disappointed."
The Mechanic's statements above, describes this vehicle very well.
