1980 Mercedes-Benz 300SD Turbo Diesel W116 for sale with no reserve. One-family owned since new. Starts; runs and drives. Needs work, see below.
The 3.0L I5 Turbodiesel engine seems strong and it shifts fine. It has working brakes, wipers and lighting and approximately 60%-70% tread on tires. The items that are not currently working that I am aware of include (but not limited to) power antenna, the right rear door won't open, left rear door only opens from the inside and the right, rear power window does not work. A/C was converted to R134a and blowing cool though compressor doesn't always turn on. Rear axle boots/arms are leaking and noisy. The ignition buzzer doesn't shut off when the key is removed causing it to drain the battery over time so I installed a battery-disconnect switch under the hood. (The ignition key cylinder will most likely need to be replaced to remedy this issue). The odometer failed though the speedometer works fine so the actual mileage is higher than the 164,591 showing. There are cracks in the dash top and the wood is cracking in the console area. Seating and headliner look good.
This is a 38-year-old project car so expect old paint, dings, chips, a couple of small rust spots visible in photos, (floors are good, very solid) etc. A good detailing will make a big difference. Otherwise, it starts and drives. Most parts are relatively inexpensive and the car is fairly simple to work on. Being diesel, no smog is required in California.
