1973 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

This belonged to the mother of a good friend of mine. He was raised in Germany while his father was an instructor there. They brought the car back to the U.S. with them when they returned. She took such good care of it. She never even allowed her children to ride in it. The 118,000 miles are original and the car is in excellent condition. Just for good measures my friend's father had a new soft top installed at the dealership just before he past away. I have owned this for a few years and have a large insulated garage. I use it only to get pastries with my daughter on weekends when the weather is nice. I have never driven it in the rain.
There are some minor issues, but nothing major. I will list the issues that I am aware of. The right window switch quit working a few months ago. Should be replaced. Some areas have faded slightly different than the rest of the car. It had a European license plate on it for years and the paint did not fade underneath it. I took it off and put just the California plate on it. I see no evidence of a repaint. I believe it to be original paint. Still shines! The paint is so good that a good color sanding should make it all even. There is a small dent in the left rear quarter panel. The gas lines leak enough to smell at times. The rubber gas lines should be replaced and the engine tuned. It runs strong and smooth. No smoke, starts immediately. Good compression.
There are two hard tops because the top fell once while taking it off and broke the rear window and put a ding in the front. Buying a used top was cheaper than having the old one repaired so you can have them both. The replacement hardtop is a slightly different color. The soft top is terrific, as the photos show. The interior is great. There is no air conditioning. The car heater seems to work overtime. The radio works, but could be better.

We built two automated guitars for Apple Records around 2001. One was put in the office at Apple records and George Harrison took one home. His widow Olivia still has one in her home in London.
